Repair via insurance or settle?

Hi everyone unfortunately someone rammed into my car yesterday.

He said to let him know how much it will cost to repair and he will settle privately.

I don't want my premium to go up and I only have 1 years ncb.

I have his home address, number plate of the van and photos and phone number.

Any advice would be great as it's the first time I'm dealing with an accident to my car.

Also do I still need to pay the excess if its not my fault? My excess is £300

I didnt get police report I'm not sure if i should still do that now or not necessary?
  • Normally you have to pay the excess and then claim it back from the other parties insurance. Unless there were injuries, the police will not be interested I suspect.
  • You should always be telling your insurer.  The other person probably doesn't want you to do that, because he'll then have to inform Enterprise and he'll have to pay a £1000 excess if he hasn't paid for excess waiver protection.

If it was just a wing mirror I'd agree with what you're doing, but an actual collision involving someone else should always be reported.  Yes you will get your excess back if/when the other driver accepts liability.  I'm not sure about your NCD

Thank you so much everyone! Last question sorry - do I also need to contact enterprise rentals company to inform them of the accident or do I just contact my own car insurance company?

Agree, it should be fixed via your insurance as there is serious body deformation and could be underlying structural damage.

In any case you need to report it to your insurer.

That's a red flag to me; it means he's also not going to tell Enterprise. Very naughty.

Tell your insurer. You're not at fault. Let them deal with it.

Image attached below - the boot is now slightly ajar as the guy opened it today to give the quote - now i can't close it.
I agree with TadleyBaggie; if the boot won't close, it could mean there's more damage than is immediately apparent.

  • As you were stood and run into at the rear then it's not your fault so inform your insurer who will want their own repairer to fix it.
Did you get the REG No. of other vehicle?
Your insurer will deal with Enterprise.
Check your policy regarding hire car provision.

Definately an insurance job and don't be surprised if the result is a write off, that is significant damage, it isn't a £900 job, unless you want a quick new bumper, respray and sell on.

Just for comparison just over three years ago I had a claim for a new bumper, new rear light cluster and a small area of creased bodywork and it was £2,500.

If Enterprise agree it is their fault there is no need to pay excess.  If you want it sorted quickly you my need to pay the excess and argue blame afterwards.

Yes I got the reg of the van - he didn't even get out of the vehicle when it happened  :-(

I was by myself on a busy carriageway with whole line of cars waiting and it was raining very heavily!
