We go to France most years. We tried the longer LD line last year Portsmouth Le Harve If you are comming from Manchester. would give you a over night crosing ready for the drive in France. If you go more west the roads have less tolls so could be cheaper to get there. Hopefully this year we will go and watch the tour, as well as the alps in a few weeks.

Just tried to get to get a quote and it says 24 and 25 july already full and 26 limited accomodation. But coming out at £320 so a lot more, but still not a bad price for crossing.

i booked my tickets in jan and the cheapest i got car 2 passengers was £65 if i had booked a few days earlier i could have got them for less than £50 im not bothered by this i only go now by northfolkline regardless of what i pay. they are not crowded even in the height of season as the are no coach parties so its quiter and i can grab a kip if needed the ferries are cleaner and i have never ever had a problem with them we have arrived early for a ferry and was not charged for going on an earlier one we have arrived late and have not been charged. also i had to change my dates last year and was not charged for this because it has something to do with the booking being made before a certain date.... i did check out speedferries once but the problem with them is that if the weather changes they are unable to go wheras a ferry can still travell i say you have made the right choice in going with northfolklines the drive from dunkirk to calais is not far
  • hi, will be brave enough to drive to France in summer, i saw on the ferry bookings that they also offer reclining seats only, aside from berths accommodation, would you recommend this if return crossing is from Portsmouth to Caen?

Mind you,we'll have 2 kids with us and crossing at night for us to have a break driving from scotland.

On my first trip, which I did without the kids, I decided to book the reclining seats. Got there, took one look, turned round and got a cabin. For me, it would not have been any good as I have become a light sleeper since I have had the kids and it was full of teenagers who just did not look like they were going to settle down anytime soon. The cabin was clean and comfortable and worth every penny to me. This was with Brittany Ferries by the way. No experience of any others.
There are three ways to get something done; do it yourself, hire someone or forbid your kids to do it.
