Short term broadband?

Good deal that box, useful to have a device with ethernet ports + Wi-fi.QrizB said:I purchased a refurbished, unlocked 4GEE device from Amazon a couple of weeks ago. The price does go up and down but it's currently £22:Mine works fine (by the standards of the subpar mobile reception in my house) with a ScanCom Three SIM like this:Obviously you might want more than 50GB of data a month; they have SIMs to suit most use cases.0 -
My take on this is OP wants to have 2 broadband connections at the same time one in each house.JSmithy45AD said:

Has @PatKeyboard checked that they can get Sky BB at the new address? If not, that solves your problem as you'd need a new supplier anyway, Sky would terminate the original deal whenever you move (or tell them you've moved).
I agree with the posters on here about mobile broadband as a temp solution cos when your ready to move in the the new house you see abouta Sky home move or take out a new broadband deal with another company.0 -
Yes I can get Sky at the new address. I spoke to them on the phone, but to be honest, since they moved their call centres out of the UK, it's very difficult to get a straight answer on anything. They are obviously more than happy to set up a new account and have said I can move my existing account (with TV) when I decide to move properly in a few months. I might try and post on their forum to see if I can get anything in writing that I won't end up being locked into my current contract and a new one....JSmithy45AD said:

Thanks - I will see if I can test the reliability with other people's phones - I know that me and my other half (o2 and Vodafone) both have awful signal there!flaneurs_lobster said:
Yep, need to get SIMs on the ground, friends/family would be ideal. The coverage maps from the networks are pretty useless at the individual property level.PatKeyboard said:
Thank you - Is there a feasible way to do this without signing up? Or should I just find friends on different signals and test it? Do you put a SIM directly into that Mi-Fi device? Cheers!flaneurs_lobster said:
This. If you can find a network with a decent signal (test it near windows around your new gaff) you can buy a Mi-fi device for ~£20 and unlimited mobile data deals are available for about the same per month.la531983 said:Check signals for other mobile providers?
Fine for normal internet access, if your "work" is editing real-time UHD video - not so much.
Yes, the SIM goes into the Mi-fi. Here's a typical one from Cex

The sky help forum if that's what your on about is apparently nothing to do with Sky so anything that you ask and get a response from will not mean anything to Sky but the forum is very good.PatKeyboard said:

As you may have seen on the threads about Sky on here they seem to be a law unto themselves and not to be trusted with anything the reps tell you.0 -
Thanks - Yes I'm really reluctant to take out any new package with Sky to be honest, without having something in writing guaranteeing I won't be on the hook for 2 separate contracts when I move in a few months! And let's be honest, I'm not going to get that from the existing customer service set up...Boohoo said:

It absolutely is to do with Sky as they own it, most of the answers will come from other customers but there are Sky employees who can chip in and arrange to contact the customers directly.Boohoo said:

I would trust anything that the Sky employees tell you on the forum 100%.0 -
PatKeyboard said:Hi All,
In a bit of a pickle with this one and cannot seem to find a solution.
I have just bought a new house and will be moving to it in 3 - 6 months. However I want to have broadband in there so when the house is getting renovated I can work from there - this means I can't do a "move house" request with my current provider (Sky) because I want to maintain it in my current accommodation.
I cannot find anything less than a 12 month contract with any provider. Three and Virgin claim to offer no contract broadband but every time I put my postcode in I'm only offered 24 month contracts. I obviously don't want to sign up to that because in 3 - 6 months I will move my Sky package to the house anyway.
Does anyone have any other ideas? Unfortunately the signal coverage on my mobile (o2) isn't great there so tethering not an option...
Is my only option to sign up to a 12 month contract and take the hit on having to pay twice for the last 6 months potentially? Thanks!
If it's an address using Openreach copper, Openreach Full Fibre, CityFibre Full Fibre or Trooli Full Fibre, you could use a provider like IDNet who do 30 day rolling contracts for Broadband.
There might be others. On the ISPreview website, there is a full list of Broadband providers in order of customer service ratings. I think others might work out better on price over a longer contract, but IDNet do have rolling contracts if memory serves.
Hope that helps!
