Tax implications of child living with me

My adult son has had to give up his apartment due to financial pressures.  I have offered to let him live with me but I don't know if this will impact my pension and/or benefits.  He is freelance with his own Limited Company but is normally able to support himself.
Can he use my address as his business address and can he stay with me as a temporary solution?
Appreciate the forums suggestions and advice.

  • It shouldn’t affect your pension. It might affect your benefits if you get a housing element and it will if you get a disability premium for living alone. I think I’m right in this but someone more knowledgeable should be along in a minute.

    What benefits are you getting?
  • Thanks, I appreciate your speedy response!
I do get both housing support and some living alone support.
His many concern is keeping his business going and needs somewhere to send correspondence etc etc.  If he were to stay with me, it would only be a temporary arrangement.  If he registered a new address with Companies House would he have to show that this was his own residence?

  • You need to declare that you have someone else living with you if you get benefits affected by this otherwise you are committing fraud.

  • I would charge him some rent to cover the money you may lose.

  • When you say living alone support, as far as I know there is only one component of ESA that is for having severe disability and living alone. If you are getting care visits for living alone I don’t think it matters.

I'm hearing that I need to declare everything even if it is a temporary arrangement.

You need to notify council tax as you will no longer be due single occuopancy discount. and housing benefit.

Many Ltd companies have thier accountants address as thier registered office.
