Scam Sky parcel

In October we had a parcel delivered to our address, but in my sons name. It has a Sky contact number on a label but no other details. We were immediately suspicious as my son doesn't live here now and has never had a Sky account. It appears someone hacked his details and opened one, and then ordered goods in his name. He spoke to his bank and checked everything there. He contacted Sky and  after much effort to get them to understand it was nothing to do with him, they said not to open the box and not to hand it over to anyone who claimed wrong delivery etc.  They would send return packaging/label. Nothing arrived and he went through the whole process again a few weeks later. Still nothing has been sent and the box is still sitting on the table, unopened. How long do we have to keep it like that and what are we supposed to do with it?
Thanks for any advice.

I wouldn't be worried since much about the parcel but more about your sons credit record. Tell him to check his credit file for free to see if there is a sky account

Do Sky actually report to the credit agencies ? For example, I've had Sky TV for a number of years but it doesn't appear on any of the CRA reports - probably because they take payment in advance ?

It maybe doesn't specifically matter whether SKY report to CRA's, but to check that all data held is correct.  If someone managed to hack into the individual's account and successfully set up a SKY agreement, the someone who hacked into the account might well have tried other opportunities also.

    Six years, keep it safe.

Your son should be checking his credit files with the various CRAs and also potentially putting a CIFAS protective registration in place.

What do you mean by "hacked his details", do you mean identity fraud, or have they gained access to his email accounts, credit card information or something else?

You need to keep it for 6 years, but you don't need to keep it readily available for all that time (i.e. sitting next to the door).   Write "Property of Sky, keep until 10/12/2031" on it with a marker pen then shove it to the back of a cupboard and forget about it.
  • Thank you all.
6 years!! Going to be some out of date tech by then.
I believe it was his card details Matt, he spoke to the bank as soon as we told him the parcel was here.

Practically, they're obviously not likely to turn up after 5 years and 11 months wondering where the parcel has gone - if there's no action from them reasonably soon then I think you'd be safe to assume they're not interested.

He has spoken to them twice Willowleaf and both times was told they would send out packaging and return labels. Nothing happened.
I have been looking on their website but everything seems geared up to answering customers, he has never had a Sky account. Going to try again.

Can he take it to one of the SKY pop-up sales desks that appear in shopping centres and / or hand to a SKY Technician next time a van is parked down the street?

Perhaps try and follow their official complaints process, maybe Ofcom after that.

There are template letters to follow for return/collection of items that were sent in error or intentionally to try and enforce payment. Then a chat with trading standards, a solicitor, report the fraud to the police (dont expect them to do anything but a crime number may prompt Sky).
Why would OP need to contact a solicitor?   Sky have acknowledged that OP's son has not taken out a contract with Sky.   Currently they're just an involuntary bailee for a small package.
