Have you checked what arrangements they are making to view the ceremony afterwards?
Some of them you can sign up to have clips sent to you of your relative; My nephew‘s place put the whole ceremony on YouTube.
    No I haven't.

I just looked there now.  They release it on their You Tube channel.  Is it possible to copy it from there to keep as a keepsake?

    Yes it is.

    Is it legal? Sort of.

If it's just for personal use and not for republishing then no-one is going to care.

You'll need some extra software to do the copying, I'm in no position to recommend or give guidance about this.

Much as I am dubious about AI in general, is maybe one of the occasions when it could come in useful in helping you to understand your options.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I do not want to do anything illegal.

Is there any way of legally recording the graduation?

I've attended a couple of funerals that were live streamed and in both cases the funeral directors offered the option of purchasing a recording of the funeral on DVD, perhaps you could ask the university concerned if they have anything similar?

The Snipping Tool in Windows 11 certainly can record YouTube live streams and save as .mp4 file.
