Bringing the thread back to sanity !, I had a smart plug controlling Xmas lights in the conservatory but I found it frequently lost connection to the router because it was the other side of the outside wall of the house. Have now replaced with a mechanical timer plug. On that basis I don't think one would operate in a metal box on an outside wall.

Blimey. That suggests the Smart plug is in contact with the interweb at all times. That's astonishing.
