Peugeot safety recall letter arrived 3 weeks after we had damage caused by the faulty part

I have a Peugeot 5008 19 reg which I bought from Fords of Winsford in 2022. It broke down on July 13th and was towed to my local garage. They told me that the camshaft chain had broken and that the engine needed rebuilding which cost me £3900. I recently had the recall letter from Peugeot so contacted them and they told me I wasn’t entitled to compensation as I took it to my local garage. How do I go about claiming compensation from them?0

Your consumer rights are with the seller and / or a credit provider if used. Stellantis are offering a warranty route which does not apply as that has strict conditions which include the work being carried out at an authorised dealership.0

You've tried already. They declined your claim because you're not eligible to claim on their warranty.silverchoice said:I have a Peugeot 5008 19 reg which I bought from Fords of Winsford in 2022. Consumer rights must be exercised against Fords of Winsford, but that won't work if you've already had the repair done and haven't given them a chance to address it as the retailer.0 -
I had a 3 year RAC warranty from Fords of Winsford but it just expired prior to the breakdown.Aylesbury_Duck said:

I think you're out of luck, then. The two warranty routes are unavailable, and consumer rights won't work because you didn't give the seller the chance to rectify the problem.silverchoice said:

Can you please give me details of the ombudsman because I have had the same problem with a 5008.Bigduke2004 said:
I feel your pain. The problem is that Peugeot will try wash their hands of it even if the matter as you say was a fault they have actually issued a recall for. This is a company I have a great deal of experience fighting for fairness with. I fought them for 3 and a half years over a faulty adblue system that I could prove not only were they fully aware of but they later tried to tell the ombudsman was a "characteristic of the car" (I even had the vehicle sign written with quotes from a freedom of information request) Long story short they lost the ombudsman ruling and only when they realised I was taking that report to court did they back down and buy back my car for full price paid, still not admitting fault of course. So be prepared for them to continually tell you it's not their problem. Sadly given the age of the car the retailer is unlikely to be able to do much. It might be worth considering going to the ombudsman about it with all the evidence you çan muster. There is no guarantee there though, mine was in warranty when the fault occurred and they failed to fix it continually until the warranty expired. I hear you on the fairness point but fairness is unfortunately not part of big business.LDoodleWoo20 said:I think it’s unfair that Peugeot are saying they would have retrospectively paid for the repair (per the link from Powerful_Rogue), but won’t in my case, just because the repair happened at an independent garage. Also, in that link, they say they will look at assisting repairs that happened BEFORE 1st July 2025, which is when they started to issue the recall letters. If the camshaft fails between 1st July and when we got our recall letter (14 November) then surely they should be assisting us with the cost of this repair?Life in the slow lane0 -
And again - how long have you had the car, and did where did you purchase it from?DoodleWoo20 said:The car is 7 years old and has been serviced correctly. But the point is that the safety recall letter arrived with us 3 weeks after we had a major engine problem. And that engine problem was entirely due to the exact same faulty part that Peugeot had started a recall campaign on, in July this year. Letters were sent out in phases since then. They failed to inform us in time. Our mileage is below average for a car of this age.
You may have remedy with the seller, but you're unlikely to get anywhere with Peugeot.0 -
Surely it’s with Peugeot when they have sent out recall letters for the very problem we have had !!!!molerat said:Your consumer rights are with the seller and / or a credit provider if used. Warranty is contractual with who ever provided it, but it has expired so that is irrelevant.
Unfortunately Peugeot owe you nothing.0
