I used this GOV site, is it illegal then to check if someone else vehicle is taxed and has an MOTMyRealNameToo said:
Sounds like you are illegally using the "check my vehicle is insured" which only states if your vehicle is insured or not as of today but obviously this isnt your vehicle.soolin said:

I have the lorry reg but I wasn't sure what use that was - all i can find out about it is that it is properly taxed and insured.
If I go to my insurance company now will they be able to make more use of it?
MID has a second process for applying for the insurance details of a vehicle not owned by you. You have to pay £10 and certify you have a legitimate interest (normally that the vehicle has caused damage to your property but you seem fairly relaxed about false decs anyway) and what date the incident was. It will then give you the insurer, the policy number and the contract details for claims.
Your insurers may be able to, if they also sell Motor insurance they will have access to MID on a subscription basis. If they dont sell motor they may or may not have access. Obviously as soon as you call them you then have to declare the incident for the next 5 years, in principle you need to anyway but some will choose to "forget" to if they havent spoken to any insurer.

It'll cost you £3 (from memory) but with the info you have, it should be fairly straightforward once you speak to the insurer.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. (And no - it's not illegal to check "tax" and MOT status on the .gov website, but you have to pay to check insurance on vehicles other than your own)0 -

it's been a while since I used it, but last time I did (at £3) it gave me all the info I needed to make a successful claim for a hit-and-run by a van driver. 0 -
Was the manhole cover certified for road use? Sounds as if it was not up to the job or had a fault. Cast iron or something else?1

No, but you stated it's insured which can only be checked via MID. MID has two tools, one to check your own car thats free and highlights using it to check someone else's vehicle is illegal and the paid for tool that gives you in-depth details for a specified data which is fine as long as you have a legitimate need to know their insurance details, namely you're aledging they've caused you a losssoolin said:

I think it's cast iron, even the pieces are very heavy and from the weight of each bit I probably couldn't have carried it when it was whole. No idea what it is certified for, we've only lived here for 30 years and it hasn't been replaced all that time, it shows a water company name embossed on top.Arunmor said:Was the manhole cover certified for road use? Amazon have now asked me to quote for a replacement and as I'm struggling I have emailed the water company to ask if they sell them.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Fair enough, plenty do advocate using the MID "check my vehicle" on vehicles that arent yours but thats a long running thing here.soolin said:

Is it even yours? Is it a shared public sewer below in which case it may be the property of the water company?soolin said:

Why not just contact your water company about the manhole ??
Tell them it is extremely dangerous next to a public footpath etc etc
Give them all the details of who you think caused the damage and let them deal with it.
I really don't think it's your problem at all.1 -
We have had it checked out some years ago by a building company who were doing some work on our house, also Dyna rod and similar companies we've hired over the years have told us - it's on our property and is therefore our responsibility , despite it being an off run (I'm not sure that's the correct terminology ) for other houses. It's a quirk of how our estate was built in the 1920s. Obviously it would be nice if things have changed and the water company decide to take responsibility - always hopeful!MyRealNameToo said:
