Forced to have a water meter

I am with Severn Trent and twice refused to have a water meter fitted although it was not going to be actually metered. They came back while I was away and installed it anyway. Now they are telling me this is a ‘water stressed environment’ and have said it’s mandatory for me to be metered. I know I don’t use much so it’s not that it’s just that I am selling my house and as a family house a house without a meter would be better. Can a water company just tell me I have to have one

Yes, they can. Unmetered charges are considerably more expensive for all but the most excessive water users, even for large families. No one sane is going to let a water meter influence their choice of home.Bluefairie56 said:I am with Severn Trent and twice refused to have a water meter fitted although it was not going to be actually metered. The fact that you are being force to have one means all the other houses in your area will be as well so it does not put you at a disadvantage against other properties for sale.3

Yes. As they should. You pay for gas and leccy as you go, so why not water?0

When an unmetered house is sold, the new owner will automatically have a meter fitted.0

The Severn Trent smart meters are there for near-real-time leak detection, more than for measurement. Severn Trent has an interest in avoiding OFWAT fines for leakage. This is why a consumer does not have the right of refusal.I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".1
