I fitted my dashcam yesterday following the instructions in the manual but then realised it may be for American cars.
Is this OK legally? Its not hardwired.
The black lines are the window wipers and the blue lines are to show where the window wipers go across the windscreen

You must not have cables in your field of view, particulaly directly in front of you. Can't tell from your photo if the black line(s) is/are cable or your wiper blades stuck halfway or what the blue lines are meant to represent. We have a dashcam ( it was fitted before we bought the car ) and all cables are tucked behind trim.0

The area swept by the wipers should remain clear. That looks like it'd cause an obstruction.I've always fitted mine in the top corner so it's out of the way, and if you're lucky you can hide the cable behind the trim.0

I have my dashcam behind the rearview mirror with cables tucked away, so it is not in my line of sight, you can angle the dashcam to cover the road0

I have mine fitted as Markdavid1962 says, behind the mirror on the passenger side, so it doesn't block any of my view from the driver's seat.It just needs the lens to be below the dotty sunstrip, like this-

That's a rather chunky dashcam. When I last had one it was small enough to tuck behind the mirror, as the two previous posters describe.N. Hampshire, he/him. My Dashcam is fitted to the left of the rear view mirror at the same level. If you can see what the camera is recording then it is illegalIn the picture the camera is illegal - needs to be other side of mirror0

Just adding another image unfortunately it's dark out. But the camera is tucked behind the rear view mirror. My original photos are in wide angle.
The display only shows when the engine is you turn the key but haven't started the ignition. Whilst engine is switched on its just lights next to buttons
I'm going to look again in the daylight and see about moving to the other side

If you can see the image that is being recorded then it is in the wrong place - it can be a distraction.Dash cams have a wide angle lens so fitting behind the rear view mirror ensures coverage0

A dashcam can legally intrude up to 40mm into the area swept by the wipers and, if you think about it, it makes sense to do so otherwise on a rainy day there would be limited visibility for the dashcam.Herzlos said:The area swept by the wipers should remain clear.
