How to operate heating without room sensor/thermostat/controller thingie

Afternoon all

I have an Ecodan heat pump and a Mitsubishi portable wireless remote controller. A couple of days ago I managed to drop it and the batteries came out.   Having done lots of reading and tried various things I'm pretty sure I need to re-pair it with the receiver and I'm fairly clear how to do this.  However the receiver is about 8 ft high in the airing cupboard behind the cylinder.  My daughter will come over and hold the ladder while I reset it but can't come till the weekend.

My question is, how do I get the heating to come on without doing using the remote?  The last few days have been reasonably mild but it's pretty chilly today.

I'm sure it's probably something simple so would be grateful for your help.  Thank you.

  • My system doesn't connect directly with the heat pump. The remote/receiver system turns on the central heating pump, and the heat pump responds to that. I have GSHP with a buffer tank, so appreciate that this may not be how the majority of ASHPs operate.

    However, if yours is like that, the heat pump itself will be ready and waiting, just needing the central heating pump to be turned on. Perhaps that is something you can do manually, or there is a thermostat that you can adjust manually?

    Usually most thermostat remotes and receivers will stay paired when batteries are changed (and/or the mains is lost in a power cut); so you seem to have been unfortunate there.

    Can you find a long stick - bamboo cane, net curtain pole for example - with which to press the re-pair button from ground level, safely?

    Can you ask a neighbour to help?  I'd be willing to assist most of my near neighbours, if not all ;) .

    NB  The manual says
    The wireless receiver does not go through a pairing process unless the Ecodan system is off. When the system is ON, be sure to turn it off before beginning the pairing process.

    So it might be worth turning the HP unit itself to off for a few (5?) minutes and then back on again to see if the two start talking again?  Or even a full hard mains reset of the complete system.  {Both of which you may already have done.}

    Thank you both.  I'm afraid I'm the most able bodied of my neighbours despite being a overweight granny in my 70s! I'm usually the one called upon to do things for them.  I might get up on a chair tomorrow and see if I can reach the switch - unfortunately it's apparently on the top of the unit so I can't see it from below to hit it with a stick.  Yes I've tried switching off and on but interestingly we did have a power cut too.  Usually if that happens it resets itself once back on.

    Strummer22 yes this feels plausible, I can hear it chugging away in the usual manner, it just needs something to throw all that heat at the radiators.

    Thanks both, if you hear a crash tomorrow it'll only be me cascading down the stairs, together with a chair and the dog.  Don't like to be beaten!

    Chairs and stairs are not a good combination, so don't do stuff like that, especially if no one else is around to either pick you up or call an ambulance
