There is a fundamental point that gets overlooked in this argument, the same point that gets missed in

We are all different - thankfully.

And that was exactly my point! I’m not criticising anyone for chasing the cashbacks, I’m just contributing to the discussion to put forward an alternative point of view lest anyone think we’re all the same.

Regarding your example of Madame Tussauds, that again is my point. You were going there anyway, whether or not there was a cashback offer - you didn’t change your behaviour in any way to avail yourself of it. Cashback received in the normal course of events is fine by me.

However - just because this engages you - it doesn't mean that it works for others.

Hope I haven't offended you, that was not my intention. I just wonder why you would take time to register and look at the mse (money savings expert) forum if you don't want to save a few quid here and there. Through my bank cashback and Airtime rewards I have got about £550 back over the last 2 years. As long as the company is reputable I will make my choice on where I buy from by price. I have no loyalty to one company and if one wants to give my 3,5,10% whatever back for buying from them, I will.
No offence taken ;) I’ve been around far too long for that.

For me the MSE forums are there to discuss finance generally, and more specifically in each forum. This particular forum is about budgeting and bank accounts, quite a wide remit. I have a 45 year interest in banking and have had accounts with every bank going, past and present. I’m just not interested in jumping through *any* hoops to procure a little cashback. Saving a few quid here or there is just not on my agenda. Pretty much everything else discussed in this forum certainly is.

There's a saying 'don't let the tax tail wag the investment dog' - the same applies to discount offers too.
pedrodelgado how low a percentage would cashback have to be before you didn't go out of your way to get it?

I don't exactly go out of my way. Had to buy a new fridge freezer recently, found the best price at ao. Had a quick look on Airtime rewards and my Credit card cashback. took 3 minutes. Had 3% on my credit card (which is 0.5% cashback too) and also 1.5% via Airtime rewards.  £27 off for 3 mins work is worth it to me. I also have coupert on my laptop which auto tries discount codes which can save time and money too. In sporting terms, it's called the aggregation of marginal gains. One gain on it's own you may think not worth it, but accumulate them and it starts adding up. I'm early retired and worked too hard to achieve it, I'm not gonna start giving it away when I don't have to.

I can’t be bothered with these cashback perks. I’m not prepared to look through the cashback deals to find one to use. If they want me to jump through hoops my automatic reaction is a simple ‘no’. I have accounts with RBS and Virgin Money and never have I received cashback by virtue of just using my cards day to day. To me that suggests people must peruse the deals and deliberately purchase from one or more retailers on the list, maybe making purchases they wouldn’t otherwise make. The deals are there because retailers feel it would be advantageous to them, not advantageous to the customer. Just give us automatic cashback on spending.

I used to use Quidco until the cookies stopped tracking because of my web security and even though I provided Quidco with screenshots to prove I had purchased an insurance policy through their own comparison site they refused to honour the deal simply because the cookie hadn’t tracked. Since then I have stopped using such sites. Most deals can be replicated fairly easily on a case by case basis.
The Virgin and Natwest (and I assume the RBS) ones are automatic. You register for the programme, not the individual deals. Once your card is registered you benefit from all current offers. I've had cashback before on random purchses that I didn't know had an offer, as I am not obsessive about checking the app before I spend.

I used the ASDA one through Natwest last week, and it tracked. £7 for a £70 spend I would have done anyway. I bought the Christmas booze*. The good thing with these offers is they work with any spend - Alcohol, Tobacco, Gift Cards, as long as it goes through a normal checkout. They don't tend to work in the petrol station though, unfortunatly. Morrisons used to pop up quite regularly, and I've seen Waitrose before too.

*I think it's actually £7.70 as it seems to have tracked twice, one for the 10% ASDA cashback, and again for the generic Natwest Reward Credit Card 1% in Supermarkets cashback.
    Hi

I'm interested in your comment with regard to gift cards. I must admit I thought these were not included. Do you know if it works for a top-up?

    Cheers

Item level data is not shared with the merchant bank. All they see is the merchant name, MCC and total. If it goes through the same till as groceries it'll appear no different to groceries.

The cashback is paid by Natwest (or actually a third party on their behalf). As long as your purchase goes through a normal till, it should work. Natwest just see you spending £50 or whatever - not what you've bought.
  • Many thanks to you both.
  • Thanks to those posting this cashback as the usual offers are not so appealing. I used my up "until now not used" virgin current account debit card at Asda to buy mainly Xmas booze on Saturday (making use of the 25% off 6 bottles of wine and the £20 Jack Daniels 1 litre offers). Today received the 10% cashback. My virgin CA has had 1p in it  for ages, so I topped it up by faster payments. Strange that it came up as pending but on enquiring I was told it was available to spend immediately.
The 10% cashback offer has been renewed until Xmas. I presume I can benefit again on another Asda shop before Xmas?

I have 2 cashback amounts pending from the last offer, so (although no guarantees as not paid yet...) it looks like you can use multiple times okay.

It will usually say if it's limited to single use only.

Update on my case with Virgin. Got my cashback paid plus compensation for the stress on calls plus the incompetence of the staff. I have to say the complaints team were very good. They checked all the calls I'd made and upheld my complaint. £75 compensation.

Sounds like I really should have followed up on a similar missing 10% from a Superdrug purchase - if you give them the date, time, order number, amount and the card you paid with and the computer still says "No" then I just gave up because it was just ~£6.

Presumably you were dealing with Visa Rewards answering the phone as Virgin?
