Winter Holidays and Heat Pumps

I was talking to someone about getting a heat pump to replace their gas boiler. They spend several months during the winter away from home. With their current heating, it is on the frost setting, so the boiler only starts up when it is below 5 degrees and therefore costs very little. What is the situation with a heat pump?

Typically, heat pumps also have a frost protection setting.My gas boiler kicks in quite a bit before 5C, though, even if the room thermostat is set that low.N. Hampshire, he/him.
