Why? They asked IS THIS a question not an accusation or a statementAyr_Rage said:2026 wins - Parker Pen, American Sweets bundle, dish magic bundle

Didn't screenshot it, but it started out as SCAM, without the "Is this a"marcia_ said:

Next time I get annoyed I'll need a full screenshot as well as quoting any dubious text.
LOL.
PS. From my browser history (not a BBC edit I promise)

As per other replies, I can't see any way, on it's own, that paying in a cheque can cause you detriment.
One thing you could be careful about though, is if someone, claiming to be from Virgin Media, subsequently contacts you, and says something like "oops, we refunded you twice, please send the £65.38 back to such-and-such sort code and account number".
I think there have been scams along those lines (not necessarily pretending to be VM) where later the cheque bounces and you are down by the amount sent back.
But as long as you don't go sending the money back anywhere, even if the cheque did bounce you are no worse off than if you didn't pay it in.

I don't understand why I would when I asking about a potential scammer pretending to be Virgia Media. If there is a reason why I should, please let me know.Ayr_Rage said:1 -
This thread would be better titled "Unexpected cheque from Virgin Media".There's no reason to even suspect that it's a scam.N. Hampshire, he/him. I was commenting on your original title which started with just SCAM, not Is this a scam which was your subsequent edit, LOL.moser1878 said:

Once again context and content has been changed from the original which makes it difficult for anyone coming to the topic later to make complete sense of it all.
A word of advice, don't edit a topic title, if you've changed your thinking let readers know later on, that will make more sense, thanks.
I cannot for the life of me see how receiving a cheque in the post can be a scam, it's not as though there is a dodgy QR code on it and you being asked to scan it in a banking app to get paid.1 -
There is a code on it as well as the usual way of filling out a cheque.Ayr_Rage said:

Thanks for your help. I'll contact my bank to see if they can check if the issuing back checks out with Virgin Media.Detail_Merchant said:As per other replies, I can't see any way, on it's own, that paying in a cheque can cause you detriment.

I've had that with utility companies a number of times, a few years after i cancelled they have sent me a cheque saying they miscalculated my final bill.moser1878 said:
I've no idea, it just seemed extremely odd after 5 years and having already paid me back what they owed me.sammyjammy said:How could it be a scam? Cash the cheque and see if it clears.
I can't see how anyone could defraud you without involving getting something back from you, so I'd just scan it with your banking app and see if it clears.1
