Since this is a newish build wouldn't the Openreach FTTP install be able to follow the ducting of the existing copper supply from the kerb to the first floor dwelling?

I wouldn't be banking on a 14 year old property having a phone cable being in any sort of ducting internally.
This is outside of my wheelhouse, I am financial rather than technical or engineering. Though pretty good at financial engineering!

There are no visible wires, cables or pipes on the inside of the property at all. Just four active phone line sockets, three in the living room and one in the bedroom (all first floor).

Edited to write that there is no visible way of seeing how the phone line enters the property, let alone gets upstairs. I assume this is running behind the plasterboards.

You will be moved to full fibre eventually as will the majority of us, so you'll need a new cable and hole in your wall from somebody.

Yes we all  go full fibre who are on Open Reach now.
OR removed my copper wires then installed a fibre exactly where the copper had been inside and outside the house, so new holes drilled. From the outside to the inside it enters below floor board level and comes up through old hole in floor board opposite of my hall.

My property and trunking under the pavement go back to 1962, I'm the original owner, over the past years electric, gas, water have all been replaced or repaired and when I've looked down the trunking for OR was in a right state with the telephone wire being visible.  When 2 years ago and OP putting the fibre through it came through the ground Ok to my pole.  I was very surprised.

As Virgin offered a pre-installation engineer visit, I made the go live date the end of December. In my mind I could then always pull out if the installation was going to be too invasive, after discussing with the engineer, and stick with NOW. But I have lost confidence in getting the type of pre-installation discussion that looked like was on the table, before pulling the trigger.

    Some comedy here.

Apparently pre-installation visits don't happen currently, and Virgin booked in both external and internal work today. Three vans arrived.

It can just about be seen in the picture on my OP, when the property was built they built the steps half over the thing they call the elephant's foot. So it can't be accessed. Crazy stuff, so as Virgin don't own that part of kit, BT have to come out and open up the step that has been built, make good so that the elephant's foot is exposed, Virgin come back, do the fitting, BT then return to put the steps back together...

I was reasonably fortunate, as Virgin offered me an earlier day for the work than I originally planned, which I accepted. So I still have my original broadband running for a few weeks.

They looked at my next door neighbour's property, and said it was exactly the same :D

They sent me an email telling me they now can't do it until 14th Jan, so I've knocked it on the head.
