ULEZ unfair charges

I signed up for autopay dd  five years ago and sold my car in August.  According to terms and conditions I had to deregister my car otherwise I would be liable.  The new owner has cost me £300 in ULEZ charges as TFL sent me monthly invoices so I was only aware of the charges too late to deregister my car.
Is there anything I can do?
My bank says I have to pay and TFL have quoted terms and conditions but in court is it true that unless you are explaining terms and conditions at time it's invalid?

If you failed to deregister your car you only have yourself to blame and are bound by the T&C you agreed to.

T&C were not clearly explained 5 years ago.  Can I not complain  about not getting a weekly invoice so I would realise sooner?  There was an article in The Times consumer question a person in exactly this situation and they got a full refund

If your situation is EXACTLY the same as the person in The Times article then appeal quoting that case.

However anyone selling a car should always cancel any ongoing subscriptions so you are really the one who messed up.

I emailed quoted The Times article and they said I have to pay.  If the new owner tried to register they couldn't because on their system it's registered with me.  It's very unfair that I have to pay.  I obviously have proof from DVLA why can't they cancel the payment and charge the new owner

Surely you just had to read the terms online?
It was not a face-to-face agreement.
If you didn't understand the terms, was there a web chat available?  Or, why did you sign up to unexplained terms?

Then obviously your case was not the same as the one in the article.

Have you contacted the person who bought your car and asked them for a contribution to their charges.

Sometimes we just have to take our mistakes on the chin.

I don't think that five years ago I was aware that I would be liable even if I sold my car.   I signed up just incase I drove into ULEZ and didn't know it.  I'm happy to pay a week of charges according to t&c if they had informed me but two months passed by of charges before they invoiced me

It doesn't matter what you are happy to pay, you are legally obliged to pay, unless you can prove otherwise.  I don't see you have any reason for your error other than its your own fault.  You signed up five years ago and then when the car no longer belonged to you you failed to let them know or rescind the payment method.  Its pretty simple.  Hopefully you've now done that.

Its like me moving house and not cancelling the milkman!

Just be warned, I suspect  it's the same with all the autopay systems. I am signed up for the Dart charge (Thames crossing) and it does warn you to remove cars that you no longer own. As we crossed the bridge to buy 2 of our last cars we had to remove the old cars once we left them at the dealers, and add the new car to avoid being charged on the old cars should they be used by staff at the dealers or bought quickly.

My son did buy a car that the old owner still had registered, and that caused a lot of issues as DS couldn't register the car, nor could he pay and the dealer was unable or reluctant to contact the previous owner to get them to remove it.
