No heat tonight, Worcester, Greenstar 18Ri, smart meters, Octopus Energy D/D
Hello all, we are both over 75 and our Central Heating has not been working this evening.
So, we had our 11 year old 18Ri boiler serviced as usual about 6 weeks ago, the only comment being low inhibitor.
A few days ago we noticed that the radiators had gone cold so I went into the garage where the boiler is and it was off, so I did a reset and all seemed OK. Last night similar happened and tonight the same, when the boiler has stopped working the blue light is on and not flashing.
I rang my plumber, told him the story and he thought it very unusual that the boiler would not work even with the blue light on. The CH control unit seems to be working fine, and the Thermostat is set to 22 degrees in a 18 degrees hallway.
So we do not know if our gas smart meter has a fault, if the control unit or stat have a fault or even if there is something wrong with our Worcester,
I will be ringing around tomorrow but any tips or advice most welcome. TIA

So, is the heating engineer not coming back to have a look?
I have more to offer, but that would be my first suggestion..

Does it heat up your water ok?1
-
Does the thermostat / roomstat need new batteries?0
-
Is the system pressure adequate?
But, yes, the individual who serviced the system a few weeks back needs to return to look.
Faulty smart meter would not affect actual gas flow.1 -
Do you have another gas appliance, eg. a hob or stove? Is that working? If it is, you have a live gas supply and the problem is with your boiler or its control system.N. Hampshire, he/him. A few weeks ago my boiler would not fire up. After doing the usual, there was still a problem. Checked my gas oven and there was no gas supply.Grumpy_chap said:Is the system pressure adequate?

Checked the gas smart meter and it had no screen.
Called Scottish Power and when the plumber arrived he diagnosed immediately, that the battery in the smart meter which is one of the first type, had died and shut down the boiler.3 -
Good morning - first things first - you have other heating that you are able to use in the meantime -electric plug in heaters of some sort?
I take it that you have checked that the water pressure in the boiler is showing at the right level? It's far from unheard of for engineers to do work on heating systems and fail to check that the pressure is OK afterwards - this happened to my Mum just last week in fact - in her case radiators were bled and the engineer didn't check the pressure afterwards - meaning that she was left with no heating, Thankfully she diagnosed the issue quickly and we were able to call round and sort it for her.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

Thanks for the replies all.
The engineer is OK, he is confused that the blue light remains on but he is coming out on Thursday if we cannot resolve the matter.
Yes we have water OK, but that will change if the boiler stays off for too long.
We do not have another gas appliance.
Our room stat is in the hallway, I am sure it is connected to the mains but I will have a look to see if it needs a battery for certain things, it is a good point.
I have had a look at our OE account and the daily gas use is a bit like New York, with nearly all longish lines and then some gaps where the boiler was not working.
This morning the CH came on OK as usual but then shut down after about an hour.
I have spoken with OE and they are getting in touch with their engineers with a view to bringing out a new gas meter.
Again, many thanks to you all..0 -
Sacred Stephen I have just put two new batteries in the stat and it looks encouraging, I'll give it a couple of hours to see if you've cracked it.

Could the pump that circulates the water through the central heating system be failing and only working intermittently? I experienced a pump failure once and the boiler would come on as normal but quickly go off again because the water was not being circulated, so it quickly overheated and caused the boiler to cut-out.SirFreddy said:
