Halifax Halifax Group plc Historical Share Price on 10 Feb 2000

Hi,

I've seen a few threads on this type of topic, but unfortunately nothing answers my query.

For Capital Gains Tax records, I need to know the share price for Halifax Group plc on 10 Feb 2000.

  • I've tried emailing archives@lloydsbanking.com (as suggested by AI)
  • I've tried Yahoo historical share prices but they have nothing for HFX (it's now LLOY bur wasn't in 2000)
  • I've tried the LSEG Historical Price service (Historical Price Service | London Stock Exchange) but this falls over when I get to the payment part - payment is instantly declined (too fast to check?) for two cards.

Can anyone help?

Specifically does any one know if Historical Price Service | London Stock Exchange is a live and working service? Or if archives@lloydsbanking.com ever responds?

Any other ideas most welcome!

Thanks
Steve

    From the LSE site

    Service interruption

The online payments tool used to purchase historical prices is currently unavailable. We are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

Because of some legacy complication with the legal structure of TSB wasn't it structured as a reverse takeover? In that case the figures you find for Lloyds before the merger may actually be Halifax Bank or HBOS plc data.

Edit: I've muddled this up with TSB and Lloyds. Technically TSB bought Lloyds.

A paper like the FT will have these data in its archive but accessing it for free will be the problem.

Anyway, I found this in the HBOS plc 2001 annual report and you could try Googling for others: if you're lucky you might find a share price chart. The price for Halifax on 31/12/00 was 663.5p. When it mentions, "the Group" I think it's referring to HBOS plc: it appears there were separately listed entities.

Whatever figure you might find I think it's further complicated by Lloyds share splits: in 2009 it looks like there were two.

@flaneurs_lobster - Not sure how I failed to see that. Thanks. Never tried to use service until today so will assume I got unlucky and will try again tomorrow
@wmb194 - Thank you. I think the history is that Halifax floated, then merged with Royal Bank of Scotland to be come HBOS and then finally were rescued by Lloyds during the 2007 banking crisis. So it's not as simple as looking at Llyods price due to this? I can account for the Lloyds share splits - no issue there. Did hunt for an annual report before coming to the forum - the issue is that broad use of the internet had barely started! Anyway, will check again.... Thank you

Halifax merged with Bank of Scotland, not the (different) Royal Bank of Scotland, in late 2008.

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HBOS, HBOS shareholders received 0.605 of a Lloyds share for each of theirs.

Known (at least in Edinburgh) as "the Auld Bank" and "the New Bank", avoids confusion.

Halifax was bought by Bank of Scotland (not Royal Bank of Scotland) in September 2001. The HBOS plc annual report I l linked above was for 2001 so it makes sense it talks about the share prices of three entities, two pre-merger and one post.

Unfortunately my copy of MS Money has failed me. I owned Halifax shares from when they were floated but unfortunately sold them in late 1998. If it's of any use, at that point (Nov 1998) they were trading at £8 per share. As I'd sold them I didn't update the price after that.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I found the 2001 annual report on Companies House and it states the share price in 2000 ranged between 431p and 713p so it fits with newatc's 10/02 price of 478.5p.
