Broadband early terminatino fee

Hi All, - we are a house that needs fast internet conenction and have only been able to go with Virgin Media as they are the only ones who serve ultrafast to our property.  I've just had an email to say OpenReach have serviced our area (hooray).  So now we can choose from many others.  For reference, we pay £50 for M250.

However, we have just signed a new 24m contract with VM and I was looking at the termination fees.  They state it would be 93% - 97% of our monthly bill.  So for us that would be about £50.  Does that seem right?  I was expecting it to be more.

Secondly - any recommenations for BB suppliers?  I'm only looking at Martin's website at their customer rating, so not really bothered outside of that.  But I do wonder who provides the best routers etc, as we do struggle getting a fast signal everywhere and the VM one is notoriously poor; moreover it won't let you connect a 3rd party (better) router without following a load of instructions which I did but it didn't work.  Or are they all the same?

Many thanks

I honestly don't think it will be that low. I was under the impression it was all of your remaining monthly bills minus the VAT. i am probably wrong though.

i asked google and it did some Gemini on it.

    Example Calculation (Approximate)
    • Package: £33/month (M500 Broadband, offer price).
    • Remaining: 4 months.
    • EDF (3 months @ 85% of £33): ~£201.45.
    • 30-Day Notice (1 month @ £33): ~£33.
    • Total (Before VAT): ~£234.45.
    • With 20% VAT: ~£281.34.

Admittedly it was some time ago, but when I made an enquiry about leaving my Virgin deal early the percentage cancellation fee was per month for the rest of my contract, so basically I would have paid nearly the whole contract in full. I was also about 6 months in to a 18 month contract, so well outside any renewal time. It might be worth checking to see if it’s just a percentage of one months fee, or per month for the amount of months left.

If you reckon you've just signed up for 24 months at £50 then you'll have the rest of your 24 months to pay for which will include at least two price rises which VM may well include in their ETF calculation.

I'd suggest that your ETF would be at least £50 a month multiplied by the number of months you've got left - I'd guess at least £1000 depending on how long you've got left.

However to be sure you'd need to ask VM rather than relying on the collective wisdom of this forum

Thanks all.  I thought £50 seemed a little on the cheap side!  I will try and ask them tomorrow, hopefully I may be still in the cooling off period and could possibly cancel, but it might be easier to just wait 2 years

    £50 to terminate? That's cheap.

I had to wait until VM advised a price increase of 30 notice this allowed me to leave for nothing  during that 30days.
