Missing log books from DVLA again!!

Hi
When i bought a motorcycle from a dealership they sent the new keeper slips off to the dvla. On purchasing one i awaited the log book but it didn't arrive so after ringing them up and confirming address et etc  i got it 3 days later. A one off i thought....It happens...
Six months on i bought 2 new motorcycles from a seperate dealership and awaited the log books. After 2 weeks i went on holiday expecting them to be there on return and they didn't arrive. I confess i forgot about it. Then it suddenley came to me where are my log books and 'Not again'!. I rang them up and they told me i would have to pay £25X2 for them. Obviously they are sending them to the wrong address or something fishy is going on. It can't be that the dealerships are sending them the wrong address  as two seperate dealershps is highly unlikley . On ringing them up i confirmed the address and they said they had been sent out just like the last time. I have checked with Royal mail and i have never had any problems with anywhere else sending me mail . Why should i pay £50? This is definately their fault , it's their !!!!!! up yet again. I got a answer from their complaints dept saying i would have to pay so i am going to stage 2. How can they not arrive and yet if i ring them up and confirm my address they turn up 3 days later or they did last time i am refusing to pay this time.
My concern is two fold where are my log books going as wherever they are going they know i have them and motorcycle theft is rife in this country and why should i have to pay. I have been informed that if i took them to court it would be laughed out of court with this happening twice and its obvious it's their mistake but it's all the hassle i just do not need.

Why are dealerships sending it off in post?
They should be using online system, so you get a confirmation of change of ownership to your email straight away.

Make sure that dealership is entering the correct address & in a readable format... Which the online system does not have a problem with.

It's not clear who "them" is that you're ringing up, is it the various dealers to confirm that they sent off the documents and that they had entered your address correctly, or is it DVLA to confirm that the V5Cs were sent to your correct address? If it's the latter then it does sound like it's a RM issue.

There are at least 3 things which could have happened, all of which are out of your control: 1) the dealership never did the change of registered keeper, 2) DVLA didn't process it correctly, 3) Royal Mail didn't deliver.

I've never had issues with 2 or 3 but often I've noticed that dealers just don't do the basic admin properly. My concern would be, if they can't cope with simple admin, can they cope with a complicated mechanical vehicle?

Why would the garage be sending the new keeper to the DVLA?

    Exactly!
  • Thanks for replies.
Just to add the DVLA on both occasions have said that they have sent the log books and have given me the dates so as far as they are concerned they have left the building and yet i never recieved them. Now hear is the thing. When i traded my motorcycle in i got a letter for that said motorcycle saying that i am no longer the keeper of that vehicle. It's a standard letter and it had my correct address and i have recieved it? So as far as i am concerned they have the correct address? And yet the new motorcycle log books never made it here?. In response to option 1 you mentioned as i said in my first post it's highly unlikley that 2 seperate dealerships have sent the wrong address to the DVLA and for your option 3 as said i have never had a problem with Royal mail.So i am left with option 2 .

DVLA don't know two (or more) separate vehicles are in fact owned (or have been, because its a trade in and a new purchase) by the same owner and don't reconcile or correct errors in given addresses.
  • i am sure you are correct but it still leaves the issue that if it was the case that two seperate dealerships one BMW and one honda must of sent the wrong address through that's highly unlikely that they have both sent the wrong address for seperate bikes. It has to be error with the DVLA .

You can't assume they sent the wrong address. They might just have not done anything at all (which is quite common). Was there a handover where you sat down and did a bunch of admin? When did you pay, relative to receiving the vehicle/keys?

Look on https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ - if the most recent V5C issue date is shortly after the keeper change, then the dealer and DVLA have done their bit.

There's over 40 million vehicles registered. Average length of keepership is about five years. 250 working days a year, and that's a little over 30,000 V5Cs posted each and every day. More, because of address changes or other reissues. So why are a mahoosively overwhelmingly huge proportion of the others arriving, but not (repeatedly) yours?

It just isn't feasible that DVLA are somehow mucking ONLY yours up, is it? The more likely scenario is the common factor in the ones that go awol... your post.

Does your post go through your front door, or is it left somewhere that others have access?
Are you absolutely sure that all other post is arriving correctly?
