As above, why do your parents expect to get back the cost of building it rather than whatever value it might be worth now?
I am presuming this was not a part of the conversation when the arrangement was first made?

There's also a question as to the status of the annexe. Did it have planning permission? Is it separately registered for Council Tax? Are there restrictions on who can live there?

Thank you for your advice, the annexe was built with their savings, house sold after.
We (husband and I) didn’t want the annex built but there was no other option, both refused to go in a home, both wanted me to be at their house but I have a family too and that wasn’t feasible.  I think you’re right, the relationship has reluctantly broke down and to protect my own sanity I should now walk away and wait for them to approach me.
Of course there was another option.
Say 'no' to their 'wants' (too late now).

Why would you wait for them to approach you?
If the relationship has broken down (and if my parents had behaved like yours did and them accused me of scamming them, there would be no way, they'd remain in my life), what are you expecting them to come back and say?
