Get a new phone they said, it'll be fun, they said!!!
So, finally decided to upgrade my aging Moto G6, to a Pixel 8a
I'd read that one should be able to copy apps and data over, easily.
Both devises connected to wifi - check
Both fully charged and unlocked - check
Both phones logged in to Google account - check
Account is backed up (I think)
Bluetooth on - check
New phone displayed QR code - new phone didn't seem to want to recognise it (first problem)
I have a connecting cable, but can't find another way of prompting it to start the transfer.
I've hit a dead end. Any ideas?
I've watched some youtube clips, but they are saying tap buttons i'm not seeing.
I'm old (54), and only a little tech savvy, so any ideas need to be non-jargon.

"New phone displayed QR code - new phone didn't seem to want to recognise it (first problem)"
I hope you've made a typo above.
you should either be scanning the QR code from the old phone with the new Phone's camera, or vice versa.
I'm with iphone so can't help very much.... though if i recall recorectly sometimes if you scroll up or down (or press and hold) more buttons appear at the top or bottom of android screens.1 -
Pixel setup can be picky. On the 8a, go to the first-run setup screen and choose ‘Set up from an Android device’. It usually won’t react until you plug the old phone into the new one with a USB-C to USB-C cable and unlock the Moto when prompted. Once the cable’s connected, you should see the transfer prompt on the Moto.1

Out of curiosity when did 54 become old?
I never got the memo.Things that are different: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid7 -
How do I get back to that screen?Vitor said:Pixel setup can be picky. On the 8a, go to the first-run setup screen and choose ‘Set up from an Android device’. I was horrified at the" I'm old (54)" comment. With an attitude like that then you'll be totally stuffed by the time you are 60. Do you sit with a granny shawl in a rocking chair waiting for God

Mrs Matelo got a new Pixel 8a last Xmas and did the set up and transfer from her ancient Moto ?? all by herself and she is 75 years young.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers4 -

I'd read that one should be able to copy apps and data over, easily. What data are you trying to copy over?If your old phone was set up properly copying the data is relatively easy.Your contacts should sync automatically on the new phone if they're on your Google Accounts. Just sign into that account and there they are.Your photos should be viewable at http://photos.google.com if nothing else and you should be able to restore them (otherwise you can copy from the old phone)WhatsApp if you back it up on the old phone to your Google Drive, then restore that back-up on the new phone through Whatsapp itself.Call logs, SMS text can be included in the Google back-up but there are other apps available.Anything else is dependent on the app on how you do it.1 -
Yes, all the Google stuff is ok.Neil_Jones said:Sea_Shell said:So, finally decided to upgrade my aging Moto G6, to a Pixel 8a

I was hoping not to have to reload all my other apps. Banking etc.
Text-call history, yes will use another app, I think.
Music etc might have to to via laptop.
I'm sure I'll figure it out 😉

Only by doing a full reset to start off from scratchSea_Shell said:

You would have to do this anyway. Even doing a wireless cloud transfer between two modern-ish Samsung phones Ive had to re-register the device every single time.Sea_Shell said:

I've just done (most of😉) the apps I wanted manually. Pretty easy, especially as I had my old phone still. Verification emails etc.la531983 said:

Downloaded my own ringtone.
Used a third party backup and restore app for call/text history.
Some of the most annoying parts is re-setting all the phone settings, display, tones.
Hopefully this one will last me years 😉How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)0
