Help! I bought an iPhone mini

Only tiny phone I could find. It's second hand

Now found calls aren't connecting and if someone rings me they just get a message.
I don't hear anything from the other end.
Messages get through.

It's for emergencies so very worrying.

Any ideas?

I can't put the SIM back in my old phone because it was cut down for the mini. Will be 4 days min to get another.

Also heard that I have to download iTunes to put my music on and storage has to be paid for.
I'm guessing from this that I have to pay to download ringtones.
Is this right?

Bit of a mess . Any help or info welcome

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • Do messages work?

have you done a full factory reset?

You don’t need iTunes. Paying for storage is only needed if you need over and above what the phone has. Downloading ringtones? Umm, just use whatever is on it. Genuinely didn’t think people still did that beyond 2008.

The minis were great wee phones, both the 12 & 13.

    Can you make calls?

Do you know what version of iOS the phone is running?
It is possible Do Not Disturb is switched on.

What music and from where are you hoping to put on the phone?

Do you have an Apple account?

Apple Music is what is used the days for playing music, it is free to use as a player but you can subscribe and access the Apple Music store.

No need to pay for ringtones, you can make them yourself.

  • Is your phone the iPhone mini 13? If so, it is a fairly recent model.
Garage Band (standard iPhone app) can convert music into ringtones.
You get 5GB of free storage with Apple, although you can use alternative storage, for example Proton Drive (5 GB free) will semi automatically upload your photos and is private… Apple have downgraded security for UK customers, thanks to a Government requirement.

    Thanks for the info... Reassuring.

I managed to make and take a call by putting the speaker on.

Before that I couldn't hear my friend but she could hear me.
    I'll work on that tomorrow.
But I need to be able to receive calls from my 90yr old neighbour and if I have a health issue. Car accident whatever.

    Messages are ok.

I don't know where do not disturb is. Will look for that 🙂

The music is from my computer. In my last phone there was an SD card slot. Not on this. I have to downloaded iTunes and run it through that I understand. But that's not urgent.
Same with my contacts, they won't save to SIM so had to use iCloud.

Got to dash to a charity quiz in the torrential rain. Back later. Hopefully 😉

    Some hints.

Phones haven't saved contacts to the SIM for many years.

To see Do Not Disturb, use a swipe down gesture from the top right of the screen.

Once you have the phone up and running on the latest software, called iOS 26,  you can use any music file as a ringtone by highlighting it, press the share logo and tapping "Use as Ringtone"

ITunes was discontinued a while back, you should use the Apple Devices and Music app from the Microsoft store in your PC

Do you have multiple copies of your contacts in your phone? I had a glitch on my iPhone 14 which caused calls not to connect (incoming and outbound) which I resolved with a full factory reset - i.e. by wiping the phone completely and then setting it up again from scratch. The issue was contacts related.

It's a bit of a nuclear option and if you do it, I'd ensure everything is backed up first.

Could be locked to a different carrier or the speaker is faulty. If you have wired or Bluetooth headphones, try a test call using those and see if audio comes through.

If you need to keep the old phone alive, most phone shops will give you a cheap SIM adapter to let you reuse a cut-down SIM in a full-size slot. They cost pennies, and a few places will hand them over for nothing if you ask.

Some lovely and useful advice. So much to investigate.
I used an old kindle as a tablet for ages and managed to bypass using any Amazon . I'm sure there are ways with Apple too.
It offers too much for what I want and navigating round what they want v what the discerning 😉 customer wants is harrowing.
     Thanks a lot.

The phone doesn't have a headphone port but if it helps anyone, Honor are deliberately keeping the headphone port in their phones and excellent easy to use phones.
For me it's just the size and weight. Not huge and good for using the net size.

Apple replaced iTunes for Windows with Devices and Music last year.  ITunes is now basically just podcasts and AudioBooks. It was replaced for Mac in 2019.
