Energy bill query

Hi Folks, this is my first post! I am having trouble understanding fully my energy bills and am concerned that EDF have made errors on my bills. Who do I go to for independant advice, who can check my bills,  against my own  readings and tell me whether the bills are accurate? Just to  add, EDF knocked £230 off my credit because they  said there was a fault with my Smart meter. But, they've corrected, or altered, both of my bills, for gas and electric. Seems strange that  2 meters would go  wrong simultaneously. Looking forward to hearing from anyone who can offer help or advice. Thanks!

    Welcome to MSE.
I'm sure many here can help.

Could you take a photo of say one bill, block out or remove all personal details, address, meter number etc and post it here, along with what your readings are and how you think EDF are wrong?

There are many here who would be happy to help you with it - but you'll need to share quite a lot of the details to allow people to work through the calculations for you.   Obviously don't share any personal details if you show bills - block out any identifying information.

Perhaps you could start by giving some of the meter readings you've taken and your tariff and we can work out what it should have cost.

By meter we mean the one in an outdoor meter box or garage not the In House Display that is in your kitchen.

You may have to press some buttons A or B  -  make a note of the readings and any letter and number against them eg R1 or ttl. and kWh (on the electric) and m3 (gas).

If the problem with the smart meters meant they weren't getting readings, then it may be that previous bills were estimated. Check them and see.

Have they now been given the actual readings and you've used more energy than the estimates? In that situation they may well reissue older bills and any credit in your energy account would be used to pay for the gas and electricity you have actually used.

If you don't want to share all your energy bill details with strangers on the internet, most CABs have someone with experience in this area and will be able to help.

  • Firstly, thanks to  those who have replied. It's re-assuring to know that some people still care. Second - how do I reply to an individual without making a general  comment?? Third, I am  thinking about posting one of my bills on here, but just have to consider which info  to blank out. Does the meter number need hiding? Thanks people! 👍

If you want to send a message just to an individual, and not have it appear so everybody can see it, then click on their name and click on the Message button on that page. But usually it's better to let everyone see, as Robin9 suggests.
  • Does my bill make any sense to  anyone? Why have I gone from £431 in credit to £179? EDF says my meter was incorrect, but haven't stated anything other than  that.

You'll need to share the bits of the bill showing usage (in kWh) not cost. Those bits of the bill should also show if they are based on smart meter readings, customer (you) readings or whether they are estimated.
