3G switchoff and Moto G10

My Tesco contract is ending and Tesco emailed me to say the 4 year old Moto G10 I own will not work once they shut down 3G very soon. I used their checker and it confirms this. I visited the shop and the agent told me the same - I will have to upgrade my phone. However I checked the checker on MSE and on the O2 website and they say it is compatible. In fact on O2 I checked 3 ways using the IMEI number then the model number then the name. It confirms "Great news!
Your device moto g10 is compatible with 4G calling". Should I just renew my contract and wait to see if I need a new phone when the switchoff happens?

  • That phone is capable of using the 4G network and as long as your Tesco SIM is then you shouldn't need to do anything.
Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

I seems to be 4G compatible.

  • This page - https://www.tescomobile.com/content/dam/tesco-mobile/help/device-help/VoLTE%20Compatible%20Phones.pdf - lists phones under the headings: "VoLTE Compatible Phones" and "All these phones support Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling when bought from us:" and the list includes the Moto G10

Is the critical bit "...when bought from us"?

Don't think OP confirmed the source of the phone, can make a difference to firmware and therefore functionality.
  • Many thanks for all the comments, I bought the phone from Tesco and then took a sim only contract. I will visit Tesco again and show them all this great advice and see what they have to say.

AIUI, the Moto G10 is 4G.
You can check very simply by looking at the signal strength indicator which is likely to have a small "4G" next to the pyramid.

I think the e-mails from Tesco Mobile about this are simply very poorly worded.  I have been receiving the e-mail regularly and think it stems from the last time I purchased a phone from Tesco Mobile, when phones were locked to network, it was a big thing then for the phone to be 3G.

Since then, we can buy SIM-free phones from anywhere (and I have been as cheaper than Tesco Mobile) and simply swap the SIM into the new phone.  AIUI, Tesco Mobile do not then see that I am using a more recent and 4G-compliant phone.

If your SIM card is old, Tesco Mobile should swap this up to a new SIM card for free or a nominal charge.

As for renewing your contract, is the Tesco Mobile offer the most price-appropriate for your needs?  Are the SIM-only offerings from Tesco Mobile more appropriate than a new contract with new phone?

If you have a SIM only contract you need to see what the best deal is out there for you.  No need to show the phone to Tesco as the person who didn't know what they were talking about might try to sell you a new one.

The mobile staff at my Tesco change every day. I may stay with them as I pay the £9 monthly cost with Tesco Clubcard vouchers since there is little else in my area to use them on. Clubcard also gives me free double data.

My OH has a Motorola E7i Power on contract with Tesco Mobile which is nearly 5 years old and he had the same email saying it wouldn't work when 3G was switched off later this year. It panicked him so I checked around as many sites as I could and it seems fine for 4G so I presume it is a misleading email from Tesco Mobile.

I expect we will find out when they announce 3G is off in our area but I remain hopeful based on all the above comments and evidence.
