What, because of the effect it will have on the very British companies that make up the FTSE?Cobbler_tone said:Anyway, not expecting any other surprises, so guesses on the FTSE at close tomorrow?

If there is any impact, it's likely priced in by now, barring any real curve balls... it may well drop 1.7%, but even I'd be hard pressed to give Rachel credit for that...0 -
It may or may not. Nice conviction.artyboy said:

You seem to misunderstand the Motability Scheme.BlackKnightMonty said:
It’s not supposed to be impressive. But there is something for everyone. Motability shouldn’t mean fancy; but if we are to have a scheme it should be British made cars only.molerat said:
Mini Cooper, Qashqai, Juke, Corolla & Swace - a car I had never heard of before today ! - hardly an impressive list.BlackKnightMonty said:
Small, but adequate.westv said:
That would be a very small list.BlackKnightMonty said:
Imho it should be limited to vehicles manufactured in the UK.Cobbler_tone said:
Good shout that. I often wondered why they can't do a deal with Dacia or someone for mobility vehicles, as opposed to choosing from a full range. That could save a packet.BlackKnightMonty said:I did hear today that premium car brands (audi, bmw, mercedes etc) will no longer be available on motability.
it’s a start.
Excluding the rare exotic stuff there are several practical options.

At some point we have to lean in and support the UK rather than exploit it.
Individuals in receipt of certain benefits arising from health conditions may have access to the Motability Scheme as one option for financing their choice of car.
Many of those benefits are not means tested so individuals can have other income as well, which may be generous.
The benefits the individuals receive are intended to cover some of the costs that the individuals receive as a result of their medical condition that they would not incur if they were averagely fit and healthy.
Having received the funding, some of the individuals may use that towards transportation costs in the form of a car. One options for the car is via Motability, but the individual has choice and is not limited to the cars that Motability offer and can choose to acquire their car elsewhere.
FWIW, I would rather have good health and fitness than any amount of benefits or any type of car.2 -

On the subject of budget speculation, can anyone explain to me why the state pension change, NMW and sugar tax changes (EDIT: also change to carers allowance cliff edge) have been formally announced / confirmed today and not included as part of the Budget which is the natural place for tax and spending matters to be confirmed?0

To maximise engagement metrics with the event. Just normal media strategy 🤷♂️0

I find all the budget speculation kind of spiriting, and even the sanctimonious can't help themselves reading it and lambasting. But who gives a .. One things for sure, this budget will have quite an audience tomorrow.
If my future wealth gets hammered, I'll accept that if something good is done for our society. If its another self made fiscal black hole on the markets and all the extra tax is swallowed up by higher yields, she'd be better off on the Russian front.0 -
TBF most of the budget is public now, so maybe they wanted to soften things ahead of time with a smattering of ‘good’ news.Grumpy_chap said:On the subject of budget speculation, can anyone explain to me why the state pension change, NMW and sugar tax changes (EDIT: also change to carers allowance cliff edge) have been formally announced / confirmed today and not included as part of the Budget which is the natural place for tax and spending matters to be confirmed?
Not expecting many/any curve balls that haven’t been reported by the reliable BBC.0 -
Not really the case to be honest, there are still a lot left to be announced (especially whatever Bell come up for pension provisions (although I am not expecting much there apart from the rumours already discussed)), but the most important documents are not the budget but all the briefing papers and background notes that come with it since it is the small details that matter. Hopefully we will be 'permitted' to discuss the budget's impacts on pensions and retirement provisions today as who know, maybe it is too political!Cobbler_tone said:
