Huge increase in our Thames Water bill from October of this year

Following a recent bank statement indicating a much bigger spend than usual last month, I have discovered our Thames Water bill went up from £75 a month to a staggering £257 from the beginning of October of this year. A second payment for the same larger amount has just gone out. This is roughly 3.5 x the usual amount. Obviously I am going to call them, but has anyone got any thoughts or advice on this, just so I am prepared. Could this be right? If it is, I am going to be in real trouble, as I can't afford to pay such a huge amount every month.

Amounts don't mean anything.  You need to compare your consumption figures and cost per cubic meter over the last 12-24 months and ensure all previous readings were accurate.

Are you on a meter ?    Could you please post the meter readings for the last few tears ?

Can you read the meter yourself?

have you actually logged into your account and looked at your bill to see why it's that amount?
  • I am not sure - we have had a direct debit instalment plan set up since we moved around 6 years ago, and it has been a similar amount every month. In fact, a year ago it was £82 a month, so seems to have gone down a bit, apart from the most recent two payments. I can check for a meter, but not even sure when it was last read.

............., but not even sure when it was last read.

That will be on your bills but it's good practise to read your own meters

Thames Water have a moderately good on-line account system. You should be able to log on and download all your bills since moving in.

Look at your bills and give us the readings.
It could well be that you have been multiple years on estimated readings and should have been paying more and have built up arrears that need to be cleared.
