Thank you, they have said they will send the form to hmrc in january, which is why i thought it must be a tax return, am i mistaken then please? i honestly feel so worried, i am trying to relax and listen to my rational brain but my GAD brain is very powerful sometimes!vacheron said:The tabloid (and even many of the more respectable) news media outlets back when this was first announced reported this very badly and sensationally, and caused a lot of people undue stress. Unfortunately, many people still believe this to be the case, which is why you still see this incorrrect information being passed as gospel on the eBay / Vinted / Etsy / Marketplace forums.
As others have alluded to, Vinted may be required to provide your details to HMRC if you exceed certain selling criteria, these criteria are indeed about 30 items or about £1,700 in sales in the last calendar year.
Many of us on the eBay board (myself included) have had to send our NI details to eBay because of this.
However, this does not mean that you need to fill in a tax return and you would not have broken the law for not filling one in.
All meeting these criteria means is that vinted are obliged to obtain some extra info from you so that HMRC have your information in case they decide that your selling profile may need to be investigated.
Even if you were trading (which selling your own posessions is NOT) then you can still earn £1,000 per year before you even need to inform them of this activity.
Long story short, relax, all is fine!

Yes, in support group of cont based esa. The dwp terrify me, caused a near nervous breakdown the last time i had to deal with them, took months to recover, i just dont want hmrc to rattle their cage again, especially over some old jumpers i sold.Robbie64 said:I've not read all the posts closely, but to the original poster: is the beenfit you receive conts based ESA? If so, then selling items will have no effect on your benefit. You won't need to inform the DWP.Even if you get Universal Credit, which I don't think you get, then selling personal items would not affect your benefit.0 -
Hi willowdog9
We have information on the supplier information statements that online platforms such as Vinted have to send out to some of their users: https://www.litrg.org.uk/working/gig-economy/seller-information-statements . We have also written a flowchart which summarises the tax rules if you are selling goods: https://www.litrg.org.uk/sites/default/files/240109 OECD rules flowchart_0.pdf . We hope this is helpful to you. All the best

Thank you, so the form is not going to flag anything on my ni number as its only for 280 pounds over a year, is that right?1

Oh that's fine then. Yes they have to pass on your information because you hit one of the thresholds, but please refer to my previous comment as to why HMRC will not be interested in the slightestwillowdog9 said:
Yes, they sent me a form with "legal requirement" in capitals on it saying i had to provide ni number so they could tell hmrcSpoonie_Turtle said:
Wait what form did you fill in? Was it just your NI Number and details through the platform where you're selling?willowdog9 said:Thank you, im sorry you have been through that. I had no choice but to bother with hmrc though, its law if you sell more than 30 items, whatever the value, so i would have broken the law had i not filled in the form for hmrc. Im going to try and stop thinking about it, i cant change it now anyway, what will be will be i guess.
You don't have to do anything else; absolutely do NOT register with HMRC yourself as a sole trader (that's what I was worried about when you said you'd registered/filled in a form) because you are not trading.
And to reiterate, HMRC will not care and will not have any logical reason to contact DWP.1 -

If you're selling personal items and you sold 31 items it's the platform that your using that has to supply this information and they can also request your National Insurance number. But for the amount and it's personal items they really aren't interested.
