Thanks so much, yes i read that on vinted, but because i have sold over 30 things, i have had to report to hmrc, and they will tell dwp, and im just so scared that when they do, dwp will assume i am selling more and investigate, i literally cant sleep at night, and rationally, i know that even if they did investigate, i have done nothing wrong, i just got 280 for my stuff and spent it back on vinted for new stuff but the investigation alone would be hugely detrimental for my mental health, which is why im so worried. wish i had never gone near vinted.0

Thanks, do you not think it will automatically flag on my NI number though? I know my worries are completely out of proportion but thats the anxiety beast for you!! thanks for everyones replys, i am sat here crying, just so worried!0

I stand to be corrected but I don't think there us anything about needing to file a tax return on selling over 30 items, it's the value that matters.
On-line sites might ask for a NINo if selling over 30 items and report it to HMRC, but thet's different to needing to file a tax return.

My wife was recently reviewed shortly after we separated. She sold thousands of pounds of her things including lots to me (not the clothes but she sold plenty).. taking cash (which she could not prove any of the sources for) and depositing it in her bank account in large amounts much higher than anything you've taken (probably about £5k worth of stuff)... she had to basically clear an entire bedroom so she could sleep separately... her hoarding finally confronted. They did ask about the cash deposits and were satisfied... they were also satisfied with my regular payments to her as instalments for buying her electronic equipment and some furniture (we had a purchase agreement in place signed but they didn't need it)... they asked for no further evidence than the usual documents. And that was for a review which you are not facing at moment.willowdog9 said:thats what im worried about though, them querying it, it will cause me a lot of distress, do you think i should just contact them (as much as that fills me with dread also) and tell them?
You have nothing to worry about and I wouldn't have bothered with HMRC."Do not attribute to conspiracy what can adequately be explained by incompetence" - rogerblack0 -
Thank you, im sorry you have been through that. I had no choice but to bother with hmrc though, its law if you sell more than 30 items, whatever the value, so i would have broken the law had i not filled in the form for hmrc. Im going to try and stop thinking about it, i cant change it now anyway, what will be will be i guess.0

Wait what form did you fill in? Was it just your NI Number and details through the platform where you're selling?willowdog9 said:Thank you, im sorry you have been through that. The tabloid (and even many of the more respectable) news media outlets back when this was first announced reported this very badly and sensationally, and caused a lot of people undue stress. Unfortunately, many people still believe this to be the case, which is why you still see this incorrrect information being passed as gospel on the eBay / Vinted / Etsy / Marketplace forums.
As others have alluded to, Vinted may be required to provide your details to HMRC if you exceed certain selling criteria, these criteria are indeed about 30 items or about £1,700 in sales in the last calendar year.
Many of us on the eBay board (myself included) have had to send our NI details to eBay because of this.
However, this does not mean that you need to fill in a tax return and you would not have broken the law for not filling one in.
All meeting these criteria means is that vinted are obliged to obtain some extra info from you so that HMRC have your information in case they decide that your selling profile may need to be investigated.
Even if you were trading (which selling your own posessions is NOT) then you can still earn £1,000 per year before you even need to inform them of this activity.
Long story short, relax, all is fine!
• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.3 -
I've not read all the posts closely, but to the original poster: is the beenfit you receive conts based ESA? If so, then selling items will have no effect on your benefit. You won't need to inform the DWP.Even if you get Universal Credit, which I don't think you get, then selling personal items would not affect your benefit.0

Contacting them is just going to cause you more stress, if you get someone that has no clue of what you are talking about (v likely) then it will just cause a period of unnecessary stress.willowdog9 said:Believe me its the last thing i want to do but im just so worried about what will happen when they get the tax return, i wish i had just made do with my old stuff and not sold anything, i really do.
Informing HMRC is not the same as being required to do a tax return."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0 -
Yes, they sent me a form with "legal requirement" in capitals on it saying i had to provide ni number so they could tell hmrcSpoonie_Turtle said:
