My Asus laptop died yesterday, just said it had to restart due to an error but then would not restart. Took to a computer repair guy today who advised motherboard gone and not worth or unable to fix. He couldn't even get it to switch on to copy my drive. Unfortunately I hadn't backed up my drive for a couple of months 😳
He gave me the hard drive, but said he had been unable to find a case so I could access the contents so I am posting in case anyone can suggest or find one.
Picture of what he gave me below with details.

Thanks

They need one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=nvme+enclosure&crid=ECRVQ4BY29GW
Do not choose a SATA option. Only NVMe.

I second what @BFBW says. Also it’s hard to imagine a “computer repair guy” who didn’t already possess one.2

Computer Repair Guys are cool, caddys are for wimps, they go bareback with just a cable.On-the-coast said:I second what @BFBW says. Also it’s hard to imagine a “computer repair guy” who didn’t already possess one.2 -

The ones he had didn't fit as he said mine had too many pins and he suggested I Google at home, but I wasn't sure what I needed to search for, hence my post.On-the-coast said:I second what @BFBW says. Also it’s hard to imagine a “computer repair guy” who didn’t already possess one.
I did actually find the example above, but doubted whether it would fit.0 -
Doesn't sound like a “computer repair guy”. Sound like someone who is trying to make a few quid on the side. "Motherboard problem" is another way of him saying that the job is above his level of skill.akh43 said:

You can still replace failed parts on a Motherboard. That's the domain of a skilled repairer. The manufacturer/distributor/official service point will replace the whole motherboard, which is what makes it expensive. But a skilled tech can often pinpoint the point of failure and replace the offending part. In my current part of the world they charge a flat fee of £45 for motherboard repairs and I baulk at paying even that much No reason for it to cost any more than that in the U.K. Labour is the bulk of the cost, as the parts won't cost much. Even if he charged £100, it would be worth it to you.
Obviously the external case he had was for a SATA M.2 module, as opposed to NVMe.
NVMe modules have been fitted to laptops for at least seven years. How is it possible that a “computer repair guy” doesn't have a method for reading them?
