I recently asked this question: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/81716988#Comment_81716988

I decided to have the oil and filter change spending £150 today.

They have said this service ideally requires (not urgent):

Brake filter: £62, Pollen filter: £63, Brake fluid: £45

They have also said I more urgently need:

Repair punctured tyre: £18, new Hancook tyre: £95.04, Exhaust heat shield rotted through: £148.78, Clutch fluid: £45, Front and rear wiper blades smearing not split: £74 for set of 3.

The total for the none urgent work is: £170.  The total for the urgent work is: £380.82.

I am looking to replace the car asap.  Interestingly Honda said the car is worth £3000 to them as a part exchange regardless of whether I have the work done or not.  I am trying to decide what work I should have done.  I am thinking just the tyres as I won't be replacing the car immediately.

I want a Audi or Golf as my next car - wandering if these dealerships will view the car in the same way.  Should i resolve these service issues?

That's what I hinted at on your other post. These checks can throw up all sorts of unexpected things.

I presume you've had or arranged the puncture repair but how bad is the tyre that needs replacing. Is it still legal?

If you are planning on getting rid of it soon, just do enough to get by. In my book that would be the puncture repair and replace the other tyre if it was illegal or on the verge of being that.
I'd leave the rest for the next owner.

As far as trade in value goes, yes you might get the same or very near offer from VW/Audi.
Then again it could be more or less.
Just because it's a Honda doesn't mean Honda dealers will give you the best price.
At this sort of value, it's hardly going to end up on the Honda dealers forecourt but it's likely they have a used car partner that deals in older stock that will take this sort of trade in or it goes to auction.

This means it's trade in value is based on masses of data from auctions.

You might want to look at things slightly differently if you are weighing up what you want to replace this car with.
Instead of initially concentrating on trade in value, look at the "cost to change" figure.

How much is it going to cost you to get out of this one into your next car.
You need to factor in all the costs, like if it's on finance what is the finance rate and so on.

You might be offered a great trade in price at one garage but this and more gets swallowed by a much higher screen price and a higher interest rate. So get the figures and do your homework.
  • Main dealer prices, I presume...?

£25 for a set of three wiper blades, anybody with basic hand-eye coordination can fit them in minutes with no tools.
    https://www.wiperblades.co.uk/collections/honda-civic-hatchback-2012-to-2015-windscreen-wiper-blades?filter.p.m.custom.pack_type=Triple+Pack

Brake fluid and clutch fluid are the same fluid in the same reservoir, and bleeding the clutch slave through is the work of minutes on top of the brake fluid. A few quid for new fluid, half an hour's labour while the car's on the ramp. Essential to be done every few years, to avoid rusting the cylinders and calipers out from the inside - as well as reducing the risk of brakes failing when hot.
I have no idea what a "brake filter" is, unless they mean the strainer in the top of the reservoir - and that should never need changing, unless it's physically damaged or missing.

How near to illegal is the tyre that they're suggesting replacing?

Pollen filter is a periodic service item, if you want the ventilation in your car to continue working properly. Apart from basic comfort, if it clogs, you'll find you just can't clear your windscreen in the weather starting around now...

Heatshield is a source of rattles if it's not fixed securely, but it won't go AWOL. Usually five minutes with a drill and some cable ties will resecure it perfectly adequately, but main dealers won't do that.
  • If Honda have offered you 3k I'd go with that.  Less hassle.  But do compare that with estimated private price you'd expect to get. If you really want the most for your car, you'll need to go private, and get all the issues fixed, and spend time showing people the car, letting them test drive it, which to me is not worth it unless you are confident you can get substantially more than 3k.

example: I had a VW Passat 2014.  WeBuyAnyCar offered me £1800.  I persevered with a private sale and eventually got £3k for it.  I knew it was worth between 3-3.5k looking on Ebay sold items and autotrader national private listings.  So for me that was well worth doing, but it all depends how much you value your time and also how much discrpancy there is between your trade-in offer and current private sale estimates

  • I moved last year, my local Peugeot is a stone acre dealership.
I tried to book in for a mot. Reply, you need to come in and book.
I was passing the next day, so dropped in.
One mot please, yes fill in 5 pages of info, leave car for 4 hours, as we will give the car a free check.
To find £1000 of work you do not need.
    I decided their offer.
Sounds like you went to the same type dealer.
First get a few wet wipes, clean the wiper blades, if that does not work, just replace.
My 5008 take very long blades, Bosch A719S £22.77 on Amazon, Rear Bosch H840 £5.20
Under £30 for the best wipers I’ve ever used.
Pollen filter, most are never changed, even within a service contract.
They were included in my Peugeot service contract, but in year 2 and 4 they did not change them.
I checked and went to town on them. I got £200 in Peugeot credit for their error.
On my car they are a pain to change.
Take me 20-30 minutes due to location behind dash.
Does your car smell, damp or musty when heaters or air con is used, no. Don’t bother replacing pollen filter.
Heat shield, leave it to fall off.
If You part ex the car, do nothing.
    Keep mouth shut.
They will find everything wrong with your car they can to lower the price.
Did you know your brake pads, discs, master cylinder are all shot and need replacing, so do your tyres and engine and gear box.
    You are over thinking this.
The day you go to part ex, bike in with we rip off any car.
We buy any car and get their, lowest price.
If dealer is less go back and sell to them.
Show dealer price offed and they should beat it.

I'd get the tyre repaired, £18 isn't bad but you may find your local non-chain tyre place can do better.
I'd also get the wiper blades replaced. You'll be able to get them in Halfords for about £20, and they'll fit them for another £7 if you're not comfortable doing it yourself though most just clip in these days so it takes a few seconds.

That'll give you a safe car to run about in until you decide what you're doing regarding the replacement.

As the oil filter has been done and they are quoting for a Pollen Filter, I'm presuming that this "Brake Filter" is a misquote and it's actually meant to read Air Filter.

That's the right thing to do.
For your own peace of mind while you continue to use it and if there is any possibility of any come back on the car, at least you can show it's been serviced and all the safety related items have been put right before you passed it on.

  • I had a similar experience ,took my 5 year old Dacia into the dealers as i was passing anyway and asked about a light on the dashboard ,normally when due a service a small spanner light comes on but this time it was a car with a line then the spanner ,the dealer said it is just a service indicator and can i give you a price?

    MOT - £54.85 ( due January  )

Service - £360 this includes cabin and coolant service ,pollen filter and anti-freeze.

I told him it was serviced this year and has only done 5500 miles.

Will do it myself as oil,oil filter and air filter will be about  £40 ,will use local garage for MOT as they normally charge less than the GOV max.

Time to read your service schedule.
Many cars are 12 months or XX miles which ever is 1st..
So it could sit & never move for 12 months, but still need a service to keep warranty in tact.

True but the warranty on my Dacia Sandero is only 3 years so ran out nearly 2 years ago.
