Garage admits car was purchased from them in 2015 but can't say who the finance was with

Purchased new Ford from Ford main dealer in 2015. I wrote to them asking who the finance was with since I didn't have the paperwork. They replied confirming car was sold to me but said they no longer hold the data requested. My bank transactions don't go back far enough to look at standing orders or direct debits. Have moved addresses since 2015 twice. Any ideas where to go now? Don't want to use a claims company. Thanks.

Claims management company would have access to less than what you have; the only possible benefit they may have is that they have other claimants from the same firm who have been better at managing their paperwork than you so they can send a speculative application to those firms who others have been placed with but that could lead to nothing.

The current proposal is that finance companies will have to be proactive and trace their former customers. As long as you haven't changed your name, are on the open electoral register and dont have a highly common name then the chances are they will find you despite you moving twice.

Your bank may be able to give you details that far back, though they aren't showing them to you.

Have you asked them? Submitted a subject access request?

If the agreement ended less than 6 years ago, it would likely still show on a statutory credit report.  Some lenders might still have credit data on you even if the agreement ended more than 6 years ago (like Black Horse who are sloppy with GDPR).

You can request a free statutory credit report from Experian and it'll take around 7 days for you to get access to it.
