It is frequently recommend here that everyone has a backup account in case your main bank has an outage or your account gets blocked. I have contactless turned off on my main account.LabLady19 said:
That would be a brilliant suggestion if only Nationwide wasn't my main current account. Having said that, I think a second simpler account with Nationwide might end up being the simplest solution for me.GeoffTF said:
Tesco Clubcard Pay+ is not technically a prepaid card. It is a bank account without a lot of the facilities that you get with a full current account. As I have said, I now use a Nationwide FlexAccount without an overdraft facility. I have set the contactless limit to £20, and top it up to £100. It is just like cash, but safer and more convenient. The debit card looks rather smart too.LabLady19 said:I would consider adding a pre-paid card to Google Pay - but unfortunately I'm not sure that would work. I will give it a try!0 -
I'm in a similar position with the Tesco card, and use it exactly as others here do.A couple of alternatives spring to mind - Hyperjar, which Mrs Fiver has used very successfully for a while, and maybe even Revolut? I'm probably going the Hyperjar route, especially with a referral code from my Wife!0

Although posted in the wrong category some months ago. I'd like to ask again if anyone has opened a similar type account to replace this card when withdrawn in April.0

You were given various suggestions in your original thread

I am asking if anyone HAS opened a card to replace the Tesco one. I'd be interested on their opinion on their new card. If this is deemed an unnecessary thread, I am happy to have it withdrawn.la531983 said:You were given various suggestions in your original thread

I have switched my Pay+ to a Nationwide Flex Account. It is an improvement. Protection against overdrafts is the same (read the T&Cs). They are both bank accounts and provide full Visa debit cards rather than pre-paid cards. I can set the contactless limit with Nationwide, but could not with Pay+. With any luck, and with the addition of a savings account, I will qualify for the Fairer Share.caveman38 said:

I did read the original thread at the time (which as the OP states they erroneously posted in the 'Credit Cards' sub-forum) but never got round to replying.I never used Pay+, but if you're just after a kind of prepaid card arrangement then opening a Monese account is one option. Here's a table of their plans and pricing:
www.monese.com/our-pricingThe Pay as you go plan (used to be called the Simple plan) is the relevant one.- No fee for bank transfers in to the account to top it up (and they use Faster Payments so it's nigh-on immediate).
- There is a charge of £4.95 to get a physical (as opposed to virtual) contactless debit card, however that's waived with a first deposit of £100.
- There is an ATM / cash machine fee of 2% for withdrawals, so it's really only good if you want to use it as a debit card for purchases.
- No credit check.
- You do need to apply and manage it via a smartphone app (there's no web interface) - but the card works fine without any need to have the mobile with you at the time.
It's authorised as an "e-money institution" by the FCA, but isn't covered by FSCS protection, so don't keep lots of money with them.I've no connection with them other than as a customer - as a light user, I'm satisfied.(Removed by Forum Team)0 -
No, not allowed here, so probably worth editing that part of your post out.The_Groat_Counter said:I'm not too sure if it's allowed here, but they do run a referral scheme0 -
Starling offer a connected prepaid card to go alongside their current account. If I desired a prepaid card with the limitations and privileges that allows, that'd be my pick.1
