Help - EasyJet cancelled then reinstated flights

I'm hoping the experience in this group might be able to guide us on what we can do here...

I was in the Berlin airport drone mess on Friday 31st October and easyJet had to cancel our 21.35 flight to Manchester at the last minute (literally at 21.35). 

After we got the cancellation email from easyJet, the options they gave were to get a refund or to separately book an alternative flight, there was a scramble to find flights home with the best being 3 days later on Monday... Waiting 3 days wasn't an option so I booked a train + Eurostar back to the UK which was in total 12 hours+ travelling time to get home very expensive as you may expect. 

An hour later, and contrary to their previous communication, easyJet then emailed to say the flight is being delayed over night and they would advise a new time. 

Several hours later, they sent another email providing a 14.30 time for a flight the next day. 

As I was in a group with family and children, the safest option was to take the re-scheduled flight but as the train tickets were unrefundable, I had incurred the cost for the tickets. 

And of course, there was nobody from easyJet at the airport available to give any advice during the whole situation. 

TLDR - as the airline cancelled the flight, am I able to get a refund on my train tickets from them even though I travelled back on the rearranged flight?
