same here - as per usual, I only had my Nectar key fob on me at the self service checkout, which apparently doesn't work for spending...
Did you try it? I thought the fob had a mag stripe, sure I've swiped it to release self-scan guns in Sainsburys.

My fob has a stripe, I've never used it though, only the barcode.

If you add the QR code to your Google/Apple wallet you should be able to open that without needing WiFi etc.

Sadly it's one of those things that will work for people with up to date IT but not for some of us dinosaurs that carry an actual wallet along with our dumb phone.

Not the case at all, the card still works but you need to swipe the mag stripe rather than scan the barcode to spend in Sainsbobs, to collect points you can still scan the barcode.  Dinosaurs are still included.

Exactly that @molecat. I just use the card in my purse. I did download the app some time ago but now that any personalised Nectar offers appear on the hand held scanners I don't use it. The email this morning reminded me to uninstall the app. 🤣
  • I'm interested to know if anyone has actually tried to spend some points by swiping their card in the machine as per the new rules. Both me & the Sains staff tried my card, but it wouldn't work. They told me to contact Nectar, which I did, but all they could offer was to send me a new card. I'm sure it's not my card, as I only got it last year, so its not as if the magnetic strip has become old & worn or anything. I think it is ( conveniently 🙄 ) Sains computer systems, unless anyone on here can try their card & see if it works - thx alot !

Can't help with the swiping as I almost always use the hand held scanners. Last week I went in for one item and saw that the lottery till was free. I'd forgotten how difficult it is to get the nectar card to scan on a till. I think you're probably right that Sainsburys computers are very creaky and temperamental.
  • Ive just received an email which confirms this about the barcode no longer being used to spend points in sainsburys.

Well that is ridiculous, as not everyone has a smartphone to download the app. They should at least issue new cards with the QR code. shambles of such a large Company.

I have just spent ages on live chat, trying to get her to understand what is happening, would help if Sainsburys kept their staff informed. She has said there is a new card with a magnetic strip that should work instore (believe that when I see it). So she is going to send me the new card. I suggested that it might have helped if this had been stated in the e'mail, so people could apply for a new card, or better still if they automatically sent out new cards. Her reply 'I will note this down as a feedback and will forward it for the improvement and better experiences for our customers'. What a shambles.
