Check Finance Letter

I received a legitimate looking letter this morning from Check Finance regarding compensation on previous car finance. I did have a car loan 16 years ago so stupidly scanned the QR code, completed the details and sent a picture of my driving licence. After doing a bit of googling (which I know I should have done before!) it seems like this ‘company’ could be a scammer. I have received a follow up email from Consultation Claims Ltd who do seem to be a legitimate company although have terrible reviews on Trust Pilot.

My question is do I need to apply for a new driving licence or is the damage done now I’ve already sent them a picture of it? I’ve tried to report this via Action Fraud but the options to submit a new report don’t fit in with what I’ve done so I’m struggling to report it. I’m really worried that I have opened myself up to identity fraud because of my stupidity and I don’t know what to do now!

Any help / advice would be appreciated. Thank you

I would suggest you contact the company directly and say that you retract any consent you may have given them on reconsideration and that you will proceed on your own behalf.  And tell them to erase any personal data they have about you.  The worry will be that they might (or might not) do something about your finance but then may also start claiming other things like any tax rebates as this seems to be a common thing with some of these firms when they seem to have got carte blanch on people's finances.

Thanks for the advice - I did send them an email yesterday retracting my consent so hopefully that will be the end of it as it’s within the 14 day cooling off period they stated when I signed up. Thanks again for responding
  • Hi! I have done the same thing yesterday and I’m panicking a little. Have you any updates on what’s happened since you done it?
  • Same here. I don't drive but received a letter from them. My mum reminded me I took out finance in my name on her behalf years ago.
  • I've just received the same letter, I don't drive and I've never taken car finance so I just put it straight in the bin.
Did look legit though so could get a few people.
  • I have received the same letter today  so glad I checked on MSE forum  here are the company address email just in case anyone else gets the same letter
  • I did the same before reading this. I am usually so careful I really don’t know what possessed me to do it. So to try to mitigate some of the potential damage I went to my Experian account, and have blocked my credit account so no one will be able to apply for any credit in my name.
