Proof of married name?
Comments
-
Ideally the ID & Proof of address (utility bill in this case) need to have the same name on them for whatever company has requested it. You can always check with the company requesting the documents if they would accept a marriage certificate/deed poll in lieu of the ID being updated, it will be at their discretion.blackstar said:Hello all
My wife is applying for something and they have asked for proof of ID and proof of address.
So she's using a utility bill with her name and address on it. Also her passport. However, it was rejected as her married name is on the bill but her maiden name on her passport.
While we know the marriage certificate is the solution we are wondering if theres any other option?
Have read about a declaration before a solicitor? But what is that and is there anything else?
Thanks all
In the event that they don't accept the request, you will need to get at least 1 form of ID updated. If you don't want to go to the expense to update the passport (full renewal fee) just yet then go for drivers licence which is free. It normally takes about 3 weeks for it to be returned.
To update the name on a drivers licence, you will need to complete a D1 paper form which you can pick up from most larger post offices. There is no online option. Send your completed D1 form off to the DVLA with the current licence and an original *legal document to show her right to change name. If your wife holds a British Passport you can enter the passport number in section 2. It does not matter that the name has not been updated, it is used to prove identity only (not right to change name) and you won't need to send the passport off to the DVLA.
*There are 2 legal documents that you can use to change your name:
1) A deed poll (multiple routes to obtain one)
2) A marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate. (NB entitles either spouse to take the other spouses surname entirely or as a double-barrelled surname, with or without a hyphen).
If needed/relevant you can apply for a legal/original marriage certificate from the district where the marriage took place (if under 18 months) or from the General Register office if it was earlier than that. They cost £12.50 each.
