Worn or wearing bearings. Bearings don't normally wear (quickly) though, so there must have been some other underlying event, no doubt oil-based, such as a lack of quantity or pressure of oil. For example, a contaminant such as plastic (eg from worn chain guides), rubber (wet belt degradation), carbon/soot (from lack of oil changes or worn rings) or sludge build up from an overheating event, which might have been local and might have been short in duration but severe enough to cause sludge and then it acts as a catalyst for some other issue. Or wrong grade/spec of oil; or oil dilution eg with fuel.

I called garage yesterday for an update on my mum’s car.he said some kind of pipe near coil pack has come off causing the engine to cut out straight after starting.

Then I asked about metal fillings in oil,he said he can’t see anything in the oil the previous night I told him AA man showed us with his torch and oil had shiny bits like glitter.he said we’ll sort that later. He told me to call later which was Yesterday about another update so I did and he said he will start on the car in the morning which was today and call me in the afternoon, phone call never came so I called at around 2pm because they close at 4:30

I was told by receptionist he’s on another call give him a few minutes.nearly an hour had passed still no call back,I wasn’t  too far from garage so I decided to pop in and mechanic was there. He said it need a part and said Ford have not got it and try on Monday,I asked about metal in oil again he said that’s nothing to do with what they have done but previously he said nothing was in Oil on phone call previous day. They did say they would check for any engine damage or contaminated oil before they start the job.we were told nothing so obviously no engine damage or contaminated oil.

They keep on fobbing us off,I told them this had been going on too long they’ve had it since 23rd September and car has never run right since we collected on 10th October  and if it’s not fixed on Monday I want our money.he replied your not getting money back and said we haven’t paid full amount.I have invoice the bill was paid in full.

I also mentioned they have overcharged us for parts, his colleague said the spark plugs from Ford would cost £120 they charged us £108 for Bosch ones.I phoned Ford and they said the plugs for this vehicle are £35 for a set of 4! They have clearly lied to us
On Thursday night he said nothing in the oil and Today he’s saying there’s bits in there but nothing to do with them

what are my rights am I entitled to a refund? They’ve had more than enough time to fix this car and they’ve made it worse with it now having metal bits in oil

This is a new business only started up this year,Absolutely disgusting how they treat their customers

If you think there is metal in the oil, ask then to flush & change. Most sump plugs are magnetic so pick up minute parts that get passed oil filter.

But isn’t this a sign of a serious engine problem? There’s definitely metal filings in oil as found by AA guy and he showed us with his torch as it was dark when he arrived

Engines don't just have sparks plugs fall out, or oil become contaminated. It all needs properly diagnosing, by a competent garage. Until then, its just guessing.

You need more than a torch in the dark to prove metal in the oil.
You need to drain & filter the oil, look on sump plug, for metal.

As a aside, when was the oil & filter last changed?

Oil and filter change less than a year ago
