What are we leaving feedback for now?

Have just gone to leave feedback for a seller yet it seems I'm now leaving feedback on the item, not the seller.

In this modern day I can hazard a guess - did someones feelings get hurt because a buyer said something 'not nice' & now we can't leave feedback for sellers?

I bought an item that was advertised as new. When it came it most certainly was not. It was a filter for the car that had crud all in & about it. It was 100% used.

Go to return it & then seller accuses me of making a fake claim, saying I'm going to send my dirty one back & they only sent out a new one, not a used one.

So was going to leave factual feedback but apparently I'm leaving feedback on the item itself.

I’m not seeing that , I’ve just gone to try leaving feedback for a seller and I can rate the seller and then I have an optional part about leaving feedback for the item.

I agree with OP; yes the first response area is positive / negative for seller but then a large box for comments on the item.

Is this for initial appearance or to be filled in later when having had time to "use"the item? If I wanted to know about an item before I bought it, ebay would not be the site I would use

I can't provide a screenshot now as I'm at work but could what I'm seeing be because I opened a claim vs the seller?

Just seems very strange. Whatever's going on it's totally different to how it used to be.

As far as I can see it has to be filled in at the time, I've not found any way to leave anything remotely approaching feedback or a review once I've left the initial feedback (if that makes sense).

I just treat it as an expanded feedback box, where we used to have just one line for a comment.

Hopefully this will make buyers think a bit now..
One of my peeves has been buyers that leave me feedback in the form of a product review,
Like a neutral I recived recently about a pair of jeans that were brand new, un-worn  unwashed.

Left me a neutral saying 'these are tight for the size label'.

Annoyed me as they were as described,  a fraction of the retail price and delivered 2 days after purchase yet the feedback looks bad against me as the seller rather than the product itself

I get this, is yours any different ?
You can pretty much leave whatever feedback you want in that box, you are not limited to just the product.

No, that's what I USED to get.

I now get this when I click "leave feedback" against the item I've purchased...

Behind the black square is basically just a thumbnail of what I bought plus its main title.

And I can confirm that this now seems to be the way for everything as this screenshot was taken from my most recent purchase (which was a replacement for the item the shifty seller sent me) which I'd like to rate the seller positively, not the item.

I get where you're coming from because I always found it strange when people would leave feedback as you mention but then when I'd see these feedback comments left on a seller I'd just think - stupid buyer rather than dodgy seller. A bit of common sense really - as in, how is [x] the sellers fault you moron?

But you should still be able to rate the seller.

I'm more interested in why this matters.
