My dog is 10 and has been insured with Tesco for the last 9 years.
It’s lifetime cover and he has two ongoing conditions which they cover the ongoing costs for.
My renewal has increased by £2000
which seems outrageous.
which seems outrageous.
I will phone them on Monday but can anyone
offer any tips on how I should tackle this please?

Apart from getting rid of your dog you can call insurance company and see if they can reduce the premium.Lottie83 said:My dog is 10 and has been insured with Tesco for the last 9 years. It’s lifetime cover and he has two ongoing conditions which they cover the ongoing costs for.My renewal has increased by £2000

Sadly, this is why I'll never have a pet. I am shocked that you were paying £138 before the increase, totally not sustainable.
I'm afraid I see the whole industry is one massive scam. I don't exclude the Vets themselves either.
I went with my friend to a Vet as her dog was very ill, after the check up he said it would cost over £3,000 for the treatment but not to worry as the insurance would cover it. When she told him she didn't have insurance he then said he could do it for £1,800 if it wasn't through insurance.

No point trying other companies because they will exclude all the pre-existing conditions.Boohoo said:

Have you tried other pet insurance companies?Have you worked out how much money you got back from them last year?
The other option is to consider a lower level of cover. I managed to cut the premiums on my insurance by cutting the cover from 7K to 4K a year. I probably wouldn’t have done that for a much a younger dog but mine is now 14 and I’m not going be putting him through any major investigations or treatments anyway. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.2 -
I can get much cheaper policies (around £800) with other insurers but they will not cover his existing conditions. Having cover for his existing conditions is essential due to ongoing medications/treatments.Boohoo said:

Have you tried other pet insurance companies?Other insurers also make you contribute 20% towards every claim aswell as an excess. Tesco only deduct the excess.Hence they’ve got me over a barrel!0 -
The only other option for 3K is to self- insure and just get basic third-party cover.I would normally have stopped ensuring mine by now except the cost of his medication just about makes it worth keeping him insuredAll shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

I had no issue paying £138 a month as they’re paying around £1570 a year for his existing conditions. I fully expected it to increase this year, as it has every year, but £2000 does not feel reasonable!Peter999_2 said:Sadly, this is why I'll never have a pet. I still think a £2000 increase is outrageous though.I daren’t lower the cover as everything is so expensive now, diagnostics and surgery is easily over £7k.0 -
Insurance companies are in business to make a profit for their shareholders.
They have paid out £3,500 for your pet.Your premium is calculated based on how much you have claimed and how much time are likely to claim in the next year.
Remember, vet fees go up as well so the ongoing conditions will probably cost more next year.
The more you claim , the more you pay.Look at insurance as spreading the cost , rather that subsidising you.5
