No, I've been in today to Halifax. Exisiting savers do not get 7% unless they choose to close their 6% account and open another which is probably not worth it.
Abbey savers get upgraded from 6.5% to 7% automatically.

I'm glad to see Abbey have chosen to give the rate to existing customers as well as new - I only signed up last weekend and would have been miffed to know they'd improved it straigh after! Shame Halifax aren't doing the same, though I've only four months left till my year is up, so I guess it isn't worth the hassle of going into a branch to get swapped over. Who knows, if come the end of the four months, there may be even better deals around?

Can you requalify for the Halifax Regular Saver at the end of 12 months [does anyone know?] and re-enroll at the new rate? [I had orignally assumed that they would not have had the HRS running for more than 12 months, so never looked into that one?]

I think so yes. I'm sure I read it somewhere a while ago but I can't find it now...

  • In addition to setting one up in your own name can you also set up one [ or two, or many ] for children under seven years old?

  • The Abbey account can be opened as a trustee account for anyone under 16. :) Not sure about the Halifax, says minimum age 16 and sole account holders only. :(

Thats great about Abbey upping the rate to 7% for all

But their account has an inbuilt loss of interest in the final month where you have to WAIT a whole month on a lower interest rate before you can draw the funds !

the halifax is better in this regard, as on maturity the cash goes straight into their web saver !

    Please explain deemy!

Do the accounts pay out a month after the last standing order or on the anniversary of the first deposit (different in my case as I opened on the 29th of the month and pay the SO on the 5th of every month)

How do the Abbey and Halifax differ in when they pay out (I have both)
