Non payers

What is the ‘punishment’ for non paying bidders?

Out of nine items sold over the last two weeks, three have not paid.  We are talking £2 each here 🤬

I’ve cancelled the sales after a week, should I be doing anything else?  One of the ‘buyers’ has many positive feedbacks but lots of them are saying they’ve not paid.

I have had a spate of these recently too. I end up just blocking them.

Not being able to leave negative feedback is an absolute pain.

My feeling is the punishment will be nothing as eBay has no interest in punishing buyers, just sellers (hence it being impossible to leave negative feedback as a warning to other sellers no matter how much of someone's time they waste).

    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

Don't such people get a non-payer strike so you can block 'buyers' with two or more of these?

As far as I'm aware that is still the case - but so many people don't use the NPB system that serial non payers often get through.

I don't really do auctions any more and my BINs are immediate payment so I rarely have issues with non payers. However to avoid time wasting I have set my seller preferences to open an NPB at the first opportunity and it all goes through automatically.

    Setting buyer requirements | eBay

It doesn't specify '2' non paying strikes here but if you follow the link in that FAQ it takes you to the buyer buyer management page and it does still say you can block bidders with 2 or more strikes in there>

    Block settings

Block buyers who caused 2 cancellations of unpaid order within 12 month(s)

EDIT you can also check your log for who you have automatically blocked here:

Buyer requirements activity log | eBay

and if I check that then I have a buyer blocked as recently as sept 21st for too many strikes

In theory you can lose your account for having three NPB strikes, as a seller you can only block those with two strikes. I'd prefer it if it were possible to set it to one, ideally.

I feel you pain but I always contact them to ask them if they still want the item( which they bid on early in the auction)  They never reply so I always leave FB on the lines of

"Disappointing transaction.  Non paying bidder who did not respond to communication.  Now blocked."

So far Ebay have never removed this and it gives a warning to other sellers.

They do if sellers properly cancel the sale so the buyer gets a strike.

If a buyer complains then they would remove this and give you a seller strike. tempting as it seems to leave a false positive I would urge against it- all that happens is that buyer gets another lovely shiny positive rating to make them look 'good' to other sellers. never reward a non payer with a positive feedback score.
