Car Hire - Hit and Run Write Off

We hired a car from a rental company in Cyprus. We had used them on previous holidays. We also have an annual excess cover from Questor.
Two days before the end of our holiday we found our car had been hit overnight whilst parked across from our hotel. The car we were told by the rental company was a 'right off'. The police were informed. The hotel checked its CCTV and a car was seen to hit our hire car but the registration of this vehicle was not clear.
On our return we found the car deposit which had been placed on our credit card had been taken.
The hire company have ignored our request for the reason why this was taken.
Questor tell us that since we do not have an invoice from our hire company they cannot proceed with our claim to recover this money.
Any suggestions please?

The company we hired from refuse to give an invoice for the amount they claimed via our credit card.
If they would do this we can claim that amount back on our excess insurance cover. Without an invoice this cannot progress.
We are at a loss to understand their refusal to provide an invoice.
As I mentioned we had hired from them for several years without any problems at all.0
