I want a Samsung Galaxy phone, what model and where to buy from?

Hi all,

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ phone. Its starting to get a bit glitchy, and - after nearly 10 years, perhaps time to get a new phone!

As you may tell, Im not a big phone user. I use it to listen to podcasts/youtube, whatsapp, perhaps take a few photos. Occasional I may even make the odd phone call! (very rarely)

Im thinking of just getting another Samsung Galaxy phone. (I dont like Apple, or their phones, so Android is for me).

I know I dont want a bigger phone becuase it will be too big for my pocket, and I dont want a smaller phone becuase some times I watch Youtube. So 6.2 inches seems about right.

Given the above, what phone do you suggest, and best place to buy it from (I dont want a pay monthly, I just want to pay for the phoen outright and use by sim card which is with EE.)

Presuemably the S25 would be wasted on me, as I wont use all the features. I dont know, I suppose Im just looking for some advice/recommendation/things to consider. Storage capacity, a phone where the bio-login thing works 100% of the time (rather than about 70% of the time as my current phone does). Also, I hate Bixby!! Ive never used it, and despite every attempt to disable it, it always comes back! Presuemably theyve got rid of this app in later models!?

Thanks

  • Bixby's still there but I don't know a single Samsung user who's ever seen or heard him/her/it.

What's your budget? We've a few Samsungs in this house, from budget up to stupidly expensive (and great fun) Flip.

I'm more than happy with my Samsung A25. The 'S' series of phones would, also, be lost on me.  The A25 cost less than £150 about a year ago.  I bought mine from Argos... or it might have been Curry's.... either way, I would avoid buying a phone from Amazon at all costs - too many stories of empty boxes being delivered...

Never heard of Bixby.  Fingerprint login works every time.

Thanks guys. I suppose my budget is pretty limited - but Im happy to be realistic. I was in Tescos the other day and the S25+ is £1k! Stupidly expensive for my tastes/useage. So, perhaps my budget is.. I dont know... £300ish?

The chap in Tescos said that my current phone has a bevel (black border around the screen), which is wasted screen space. So a phone without a bevel is something else I need to consider.

Samsung have shifted to 6.7 inch for the majority in your price range.  Surely the A15 / 16 /17 range at below £200 would be sufficient for your needs ?  Also now offering 5 years / 5 OS updates so up to Android 20.

A26 5G is £250 after £50 cashback direct from Samsung.

Worth looking to see if EE have deals for existing customers.

As mentioned above, Samsung have concentrated on larger screen models in your price range.

If you are willing to consider an alternative make then the Google Pixel range may suit you. Voxi currently have a promotion on the Pixel 9a for £323 which includes an initial £10 for a sim card. You get the £10 refunded by phoning them up to cancel. You must cancel otherwise you carry on paying £10 per month but it's very easy. They are part of the Vodafone group.

The phones come with pure android installed so no Bixby.

I was in a similar position a couple of years ago with a Samsung Galaxy S7.
Support had ended and the S series prices had gone up considerably since I purchased it new.
I like the speed of the S models compared to the A series and went for a used S21 from Amazon Renewed.
I couldn't tell it apart from a new one and was around half the cost, maybe less.
I prefer to buy outright rather than supplied with a contract.

There are plenty of phones that meet your requirements that are not Samsung with all their bloatware that you do not need or use.

You good always head left field and look at a CMF phone from Nothing.

I've been every happy with my 512GB S22 Ultra, you can get these at moderate price from Cex. The 'S pen' is surprisingly useful. Don't go bargain bucket as you'll need a CPU that is snappy with One UI7

Also, I hate Bixby!! Ive never used it, and despite every attempt to disable it, it always comes back -

If you can follow tech instructions, there's guidance online on fully removing Bixby (and other 'bloatware') using 'adb'.

I recently upgraded from an S10 that I was very happy with to an S20. I bought a good condition used one from Cex and am very happy with it, you wouldn't know it wasn't new, and far more reasonable in price. Good size, not too big or too small, and I don't need the latest phone when I mostly use it for WhatsApp and photos.

I would have happily stuck with an S10 but good condition used ones seem harder to come by now.
