If nobody paid all the companies would quickly go bust and cease to exist.

If the rules at every car park were as clear as they could possibly be, everything was fair and there were genuine appeals services, all the companies would slowly go bust and eventually cease to exist.

Saying everybody would overstay with no ticketing is like saying everybody would become shoplifters if Tesco got rid of all their security guards.
You could make the argument that if everyone parked reasonably, and paid for parking when they're supposed to... These companies wouldn't exist.

    "supposed to"

Like people who have to download and register for a brand new app they've never heard of in an area of poor signal and are charged £100 if they don't complete the challenge in time?

    "parked reasonably"

We'd need a definition for that.

Just to play devils advocate a little bit - what do the regulars here think shops/supermarkets/stations etc should do to "police" parking? What is the best way of ensuring their genuine customers can park, but not get it overrun by non customers parking all day for free?

If it's just a free for all then the local Morrisons car park would be full of people parking there for free and then walking to their workplaces for example - then customers can't park because it is full?

As I've said before, give me a fresh car park to sign, mark and organise and I'd halve the number of tickets being issued.

And halve the profit for the parking company.

In your example, how about a physical barrier and you are given a token when you pay for your shopping so you can leave?

It doesn't happen because barriers are expensive and a parking company will knock on your door "promising to solve all your problems and also give you a percentage of the profit from paid tickets". Why spend money when you can do nothing and be given free cash?

Isn't it strange that it all worked perfectly well for decades sometimes with a little man in a white coat and a shed, until along comes Mr. Greedy with his camera on a pole that can solve all their imagined problems (or were they from his Powerpoint presentation) for free!

Not forgetting the outrageous scam of being charged at home by an unregulated third party private parking company for parking in your own parking space.
