Can't afford new passport

I live on a War pension and Universal credit pays my rent , there is no spare money for £110 to renew my passport which is my only ID suitable for banks, forms and benefits ect.

How can there be a situation where you need ID to function in life but you can't afford it ?

If you are a veteran I suggest you seek help from one of the military organisations that assist people in your situation.  It will depend on what branch of the military you belonged to.

SSAFA is the obvious one but this site might help you find the one you need.

Military, Army, RAF & Navy charities | Charities for the armed forces and ex-services

I know of someone who was ex marine and ran into debt problems with a housing service charge for a much higher amount than what you need and the marine charity came through for him.

it's a shame it comes to this after someone has served their country.

There is also a provisional driving license which can be accepted as ID by most banks and which cost a lot less than a passport.
Alternatively, wait for Starmer’s latest plan to come to fruition and then we’ll all have ID cards anyway

£94.50 online.  Given you posted on here surely you can use that method?

£94.50 is a hell of a lot to pay when you are on a very limited income.  Don't forget this is purely so he can prove his identity.

Hopefully the new identity scheme announced yesterday will help in this sort of situation.   It is very hard to prove your ID online without a driving licence or passport but why should you need them?

When I tried to register my daughter on the HMRC app so she could check her tax/pay slips it was impossible to verify her without a driving licence or passport in her name and was very frustrating.

Loads of other forms of ID are acceptable, sometimes including an expired passport

Not for anything "government". And you often need to re-prove your ID for a different service even though you were accepted by another department under old ID rules, not much joined up thinking.
