Complaining to Avis

After some advice on how to approach this with Avis.

Earlier this month we hired a car from Avis in Italy. On day 5, I was driving along when the left rear tyre deflated. Pulled into the side of the road, checked the boot to find no spare so phoned the Avis helpline. After 45 minutes on hold, Avis arranged for a towtruck to take the car away. Had to then get a taxi to take me 140km back to Bologna to pickup a new hire car (Avis have paid for the taxi).

They did not have a vehicle the same size available so was given a smaller vehicle (not ideal as there were 5 of us). Anyway the rest of the trip went fine if a little cramped on the back seat. Returned the car and now a few days later they have charged my credit card for around £900 for the breakdown truck, the repairs and for refueling (as the car was not full when the flat tyre happened). 

I have excess insurance so hopefully this will cover the above but my real issue is that the rear tyres on the first car were severely worn to the point that wire was sticking through on both. I only noticed this after we got the flat tyre but both tyres were massively worn on the inside of the tyre.

Is it worth makng a complaint to Avis about a) the worn tyres and b) the fact they could not supply a car the same size as we origially hired? Would be interested in any advice as I suspect they may just dismiss any complaint.

Was the tyres not noted on check sheet you signed when picking up car?

It doesn't mention anything about tyres. In the vehicle condition section it just lists the scratches to the bodywork etc.
