Am I insured

  • The motor insurance bureau is by no means “instant” with regard to being updated.

I couldn’t insure my new car with my existing company (Aviva) as the registration wasn’t shown on their system, yet it was showing on the DVLA website. This is probably why new cars often include a few days free insurance from the manufacturer.

It took 2 days before Aviva could see the car details and transfer the insurance…

Theoretically you are, but pragmatically I would always carry a copy of my certificate with me, be that on an electronic device or a printout. Given that it will come through online through their portal, its not like days gone by when you had to wait a couple of days for the post.
Do you also carry your MOT Cert. and driving licence at all times?
Driving licence but not MOT certificate (which don't exist any more anyway!)
Since when do MOT certificates not exist? Tax discs no - Saved £9 million whilst statistics showed they cost DVLA 10 tmes that in non payers. Driving licence in your wallet NOT in the car

Daughter's car was MOT'd last week.  No paperwork, but the results is available online, including the facility to print a certfificate.

Last time I was pulled over they knew exactly who I was by the time I was in the back of their car.  Wouldn't have been surprised if they had known the dogs names too.

MOTs have moved into the digital age so from 1 September 2021 it was optional to issue a certificate and from 29 April 2024 they are no longer issued.  Now even a VT30 failure notification only has to be issued in limited circumstances.

    Longer than that.

With the advent of computerised tests, the primary record became digital, not the certificate, in 2005-6.
The VT20 has officially been a "receipt-style certificate" since then, with no legal weight at all.

And, yes, doesn't everybody keep their photocard in their wallet? Why wouldn't you?
There's only a tiny and rapidly-shrinking minority of drivers who still have paper DLs (under 70, but haven't changed address in nearly 30 years, haven't changed entitlements, and haven't voluntarily upgraded)
