Am I insured

Just sorted out my learner daughters car insurance with Sterling Insurance - she is the registered keeper and the insurance us in her name with me and her dad as named drivers.

I've had an email with is titled "Your online insurance purchase" and which contains the policy number, start date and start time.

However, I have not had an email confirming the details of the online portal to view the documents and I paid by credit card but it is not yet showing on my online banking and the MIB can take up to a week to update.

The email says the documents will be available in the next day or two when they have done their checks.

I have tried to call to confirm cover but unfortunately they closed at 2pm 🤦‍♀️

So given I have the email - is she insured or not?

What does it come back with if you put the plate into askmid.com ?

I'd say without the entry on the MID and without the certificate, no you're not (pragmatically speaking), and they've said as such because they need a day or two to run checks. Of course, once you have the login to the portal and can download the certificate, you can be sure.

It says not insured on askMID but it also says it can take a week for insurers to update 😣

If I don't get an email through over the weekend, I guess she'll just have to wait until Monday when I can speak to them

I've had an email with is titled "Your online insurance purchase" and which contains the policy number, start date and start time.

My son got stopped the day after taking out insurance. Apparently the database hadn’t been updated, he showed the email confirming the start date and he was told that was enough proof.

I don't like the bit about doing checks.  I would assume not insured until on MIB or I had a certificate of insurance.

You’re insured from the date and time on your email as long as you have given them all the correct information that they based their quote on. Just make sure you have access to the confirmation email when driving the car until MID updates.

Not sure I would want to drive with just a confirmation of payment & when cover starts from.

Theoretically you are, but pragmatically I would always carry a copy of my certificate with me, be that on an electronic device or a printout. Given that it will come through online through their portal, its not like days gone by when you had to wait a couple of days for the post.
  • Yes, she’s insured. The confirmation email with policy number and start time is proof of cover, even if the portal/documents take a day or two to show.

Do you also carry your MOT Cert. and driving licence at all times?

Driving licence but not MOT certificate (which don't exist any more anyway!)
